Preaching the Gospel, Conservative Christian Style
NEVER A DULL MOMENT at my small southern town senior center. We have Bible study, gospel singing, and hillbilly music, but no great books study, no string quartets, no wind ensembles, no yoga, and no tai chi. None of that fancy modern stuff is Christian, and none of it has even been seen in town before, and so, we must never, ever give any of it a try. Small town conservative Christians, hating anything the least bit progressive, hating on Obama. He must be a Muslim, because he doesn't express hated of that false doctrine, and he doesn't daily proclaim himself a born again Christian. He must be some kind of socialist, because he advocates raising the minimum wage. Hatin' on Obama. They started hatin' on Obama the day he took office, or the day before, and haven't relented. Among conservative seniors, Obama never had a chance. But be damned sure that racism has nothing to do with it. Nothing at all. Nor did racism play a part fifty years ago, when these same people, in early middle age, condemned Martin Luther King, accusing him of being a trouble maker. That had nothing to do with racism either. All them damned trouble makers just happened to be black; black, and ungrateful for the wonderful life white America had bestowed on them for hundreds of years. Them young college hippies bitching about the Viet Nam War back in the sixties were just as bad (and just as correct as MLK, but don't tell conservative seniors). As long as non conforming minorities quit complaining about imaginary unfair treatment, and everyone embraces the true religion, and espouses conservative, American values, all is well among the senior center citizens. Old right wing dude walks up, and proclaims that in the gospel, the book of Leviticus, the Lords condemns homosexuality, and calls it an abomination, or Obamanation, or some such. Great intellects, these older conservative Americans. What should I do? Should I mention that in Leviticus it is written that a child who disobeys its parents must be stoned to death? Should I inquire whether the entire Bible is literally true, and must be followed without exception? Or are we free to pick and choose, to embrace some passages, while ignoring others? Are the children of these senior citizens still living? Who do these liberal Americans think they are, anyway, what with their tolerance of gay and transgender lifestyles, false religions, insistence on taking money from the achievers and giving it to the underachievers - who so they think they are, Jesus Christ?
