WE Must Change

THERE ARE  a coupla things on which we can all agree; the world is a mess, and we must change that now. we all want change in this world, at least, those of us who are sane.

need we go through it again? war, poverty, disease..environmental destruction...earthquakes have taken their toll too, in recent years, but they might be the only problem we have that we can't solve. all the others, we can solve, if we want to.

this SaLuSa character, being, from sirius, (see Galactic Federation of Light website) is telling us that very soon all these problems will be solved, and mankind will embark on a glorious era of peace, prosperity, and joy.

according to SaLuSa, the "Galactic Federation of Light", an organization of benevolent, enlighted beings,  is already aiding and will continue to aid in this process until it is complete.

if so, bring it on. i doubt any human alive would object to extraterrestrial beings assisting us in turning things around, and saving ourselves, and our posterity, instead of destroying it all, as we are currently doing.

has anyone ever seen SaLuSa? does it matter? many many people have seen unidentified flying objects, and crop circles, cattle mutilations, and creatures, but, so what? does it matter?

whatever extraterrestrials do or do not do, here, or anywhere, we here know what we have to do, and can do, to save ourselves, and the biosphere in which we so happily, but precariously , dwell. we have to change, whether with or without help. we have to do it now.

Pointing at the Moon

ONCE UPON A LONG TIME AGO,  when i was young and wild, and sampling mind altering substances, a profound notion struck me. everything that everybody says to me is B.S. everything. all of it.

the next day i laughed at myself, thinking i had been a bit extreme. now, thirty five years later, i'm not so sure.

words are like a finger, pointing at the moon, and the moon is like truth. whatever somebody, anybody, says to you, whatever you read or hear, is a finger pointing at something, and if it points anywhere near the truth, consider yourself lucky.

and when you do your own finger pointing, if you poin anywhere near truth, you'll never know it.

Beware those who speak with extreme certainly about anything. methinks the king doth protest too much.

there is an online business called "speed date". an ad from this business can appear in any email box anywhere in the world at anytime, so beware.

this business, it seems to me, is ingenious, and i would be surprised if it doen's make good money. it matches people up according to profiles, giving five minutes online "speed dates" for free, but charging for membership for longer dates and the power to choose your own date.

it makes you want to join, and pay. the only slight flaw might be in the fact that, even if you don't join, and pay money, they give you enough speed dating to make it fun, as in a sense there is an incentive not to join.

young beautiful girls come on there saying that they are looking for a long term relationship, and noticed what a wonderful man you are. they are always single, without kids, thirty - ish, drop dead gorgeous, and they are always currently living in ghana, all of them.

they all profess great interest in you, and want to come and be with you, but can't aford the ticket from ghana to america. can you help?

this too seems like a pretty good money making idea, although it must be against the law, under fraud statutes. that would be its only down side...

one wonders how many lonely, stupid guys have given out their credit card info to the love of his life in ghana? a drop dead gorgeous babe can walk up to almost any man on the planet, and elicit from him an instant promise of marriage. that fact alone makes online dating profitable.

an airline ticket from ghana? why don't these girls just do it the old fashioned way? unless, of course, the girls don't really exist...

What (the bleep) Do We Know?

THE TRUTHLESS RECONCILER AND AMERICAN EXPLICATOR has been posting articles on an entity called SaLuSa, a being allegedly from the star Sirius, who conveys messages to humanity through several different people, or at least two different people. (scroll down, see articles below)

its all speculation of course. who knows? nobody knows. nobody knows anything. Einstein got tired oF being called the greatest scientist in the world, and being accused of knowing everything, so he finally lost his patience, and  said:"we don't know one millionth of one percent of anything."...and so we don't.

for those of you who think the whole idea of UFOs and alien beings is ridiculous, do you think its more, or less ridiculous than the whole idea of you, standing here on this planet, calling other beings standing on other planets ricdiculous? I'd pretty much call it a draw.

right now, no matter where you are, you are probably within ten feet of a rat. heaven only knows what else is happening under your very feet, unbeknownst to you. this very moment there could be huge invisible spaceships hovering above your suburban home, with a crew of slap happy extraterrestrials aboard, giggling at your skepticism, needing a bit of shore leave.

for all we know there is a place called heaven, and a place called hell.

the one thing we can count on is that whatever is going on in the world, we don't have any idea what it is. maybe we never will. but we will keep trying...

Salvation Through Evolution

THE BIG PROBLEM,, of course, is climate change, global warming and rising sea levels, widespread drought, hurricanes and tornados of extreme severity and frequency, and so forth.

the good news is that all these problems, which are essentially one problem, (us), are solvable. we can survive , in spite of ourselves! we can fix our mistakes!

the human species will most probably learn how to control the weather, and thus the climate and environment, by the end of this century. desalination is already happening, in places like miami, florida, and the cost will come down and the output will increase.

we will be able to change salt water into fresh water, and transfer it from the oceans to the  many drought stricken areas of global warmed earthand in so doing reduce further global warming, bringing it to a complete halt with population control, tree planting, and science.

we will be able to use heat transfer technology to  defuse tornados and hurricanes before they ever get strong, and legislate, and implement perfect weather, according to location, everywhere. the biggest problem is likely to be in deciding what weather to implement, and where, and when, and deciding how to decide such things. you know the drill, humanity.

right now we grow enough food to feed the world, yet people starve. go figure. humanity.

human political and religious systems hinder the proper implementation of the blessings of science and technology -  human political, economic, religious , and philosophical institutions should be drastically upgraded to catch up with science and technology.

in other words, we, (humanity) need new religions, economic systems, and political systems, because our science and technology keep forging ahead, making traditional religion and attitudes  increasingly obsolete.

we evolve, or we perish.

Our Bankrupt American Empire

WHAT YOU FRIENDS OF AMERICA  around the world need to understand about america, is that america was an empire (British Empire) from the very beginning, got used to it, liked it, and decided to remain an empire. the government in london never encouraged westward expansion of her american colonies, and at one point actually prohibited it.

but the urge for expansion was always latent in american culture, and when the british empire was kicked out of america, americans promptly proceeded with the creation of their own empire, the american empire.

over the eastern mountains they went, into kentucky, ohio, and tennessee, then all the way to the ocean, stealing half of mexico in the process, and starting a few wars to justify conquest and empirial expansion.

fast forward a few years to two thousand and twelve, and the american empire consists of twelve aircraft carriers, an assortment of nuclear warheads and delivery systems, hundreds of military bases in a hundred countries, and tremendous diplomatic and military power anong the mations of the world, which she uses, shall we say, "liberally".

the american people have long been trained by their wealthy and powerful masters to embrace all this. the training has been intense, because the cause is hard to sell; to control much of the world for the benefit of america's wealthy ruling class, at the cost of millions of lives, and a depressed standard of living , education, and health care for the teeming masses in america her sweet self.

america's per capita standard of living is, what, nineteenth in the world, if still that high? in education she ranks, what.....nineteenth?  health care, longevity......not in the top ten.

but by god we americans still have our global empire, with our twelve aircraft carriers - and don't get me wrong, I love aircraft carriers, doesnt everybody - and our thriving corporate class.

the only problem is that we (america) is hopelessly bankrupt, and will soon lose our empire - one way or another.

like the rock song says "better put your kingdom up for sale". the chinese might be interested...

Celebrity Seduction

ALL EYES ARE RIVETING on the famous Justin Bieber, as our addiction to vicarious drama is carefully nurtured and exploited by our corporate masters.

now we will be spoon fed a succession of tantalizing tidbits , starting with alleged altercation between celebrity and photo journalist, a juicy hors d'oeuvres appetizer.

we then move on to the main course, the contentious and stressful legal proceedings, including choice testimony and attendant comments by the participants to the media.

...topped off with a sinfully rich dessert; legal outcome, consequences, and aftermath.

the more we think about justin, the less attention we will pay to minor matters such as growing economic inequality and corporate power. thus proceeds the master plan unabated!

another shiny, surrealistic day in our great american fun house.

aol and msn got the ball rolling by solemnly (shockingly) predicting years of incarceration for the tempestuous child. can you imagine how much money will be spent and earned before that ever happens?

all of this, every last tasty morsel, is inevitable, given the nature of the united states of advertising. the corporate propaganda project is aimed dead on, as always, at we the sheeple. distract 'em, seduce 'em, quietly enslave 'em.

when the 'bieber files" are finally finished, we shall wait patiently, obediently, for our next vicaroius adrenaline fix. fear not, we shan't wait long. our corporate masters will see to it.
they shall provide.

whence cometh the next salacious scandal? but abide, fellow sheep, the big boys shall provide, as always. just stay tuned

does justin bieber ever feel exploited? after all, the people who make big money for him make even bigger money for themselves. he doesn't feel exploited for long. we all prefer our cages guilded.

Power and Corruption

POWER CORRUPTS, AND  absolute power corrupts absolutely, according to philosopher santayana, who, as great philosophers tend to do, told a heap of truth.

consider syrian dictator assad. regular looking guy, somebody you might expect to see down at the hardware store. gorgeous wife, who might not be married to anyone who works or goes in a hardware store.

assad appears to be willing to butcher every man, woman, and child in syria to stay in power, and the rest of the world seems helpless to do anything about it.

just give anyone power, and they corrupt; they become immoral, at least, in some of their thoughts and actions, they become greedy, paranoid, angry, evil, and vicious. that's because power is addictive, like a drug, and like drugs, people love power.

we all seek power because we are hard wired to modify our immediate environemt to render it safer for us; by killing, digging, building, whatever. power is safety and protection, as well as self esteem and social status

assadin syria is going to incredible lengths to retain power, though in the back of his mind there must be at least a glimmer of a thought that he cannot do so much longer. we all go to great length to retain our power, however much or little we have, however difficult and desperate the struggle.

democracy is a solution which distributes power evenly unto all, and provides clear rules for its proper use.
at least, this is what democracy does in theory. it doesn't often work well, you might  already have noticed.

women are attrracted to men who have power, as well as wealth, and resources in general, like social status. men are tempted to increase their ability to attract women by seeking these things. the urge to mate and procreate, combined with our innate fear of personal extinction, and life becomes a constant scramble for resources.

five'll get you ten that once assad is out of power, and if he lives, his gorgorgeous wife will leave him. she'll have figured out that she's got more fertile fiels to plough.

Salvation and Disclosure

SaLuSa, THE BEING FROM THE STAR SIRIUS who speaks to humanity on the internet through one or two, or perhaps a handful of human channelers, needs to expand his/her/its audience. A website called The Galactic Federation is especially noteworthy, by its beauty. SaLuSa also appears on a site called Kauipaleles's blog, another nice and interesting site with a great message of hope and joy.

SaLuSa says beautiful things, and makes the potential, possible, probable future of humanity sound grand. But SaLuSa only speaks to several thousand people, and if what SaLuSa says is true, it should be billions.

Salusa claims only to be a messenger, as did jesus and mohammed; in the murky  human psyche the disticntion between messenger, savior, and villain becomes blurred, and we are inclined to exalt or destroy purveyors of powerful messages.

Salusa describes a hidden human oligarchy, small in number, who from behind the scene , aided and abetted by evil aliens, control virtually all human affairs, and have for centuries divided human society into two classes, wolves and sheep, in accordance with jefferson's admonitions. (thomas jefferson warned that without popular vigilance, government would divide society so).

the global corporate oligarchy seems a bit more visible than their evil alien benefactors, frankly. the fortune five hundred is easy to locate, after all.

now, or quite soon, according to salusa, is the time for humanity to cast off its yokes, and , along with the help, unspecified, by the benevolent galactic federation of light, usher in an era of unprecendented human happiness and prosperity.

all this can, happen, but must be done in the main by we the oppressed, says SaluSa. it won't be done for us, while we watch idly, so it seems. we must help. but  how, exactly? stay tuned...there is also an interesting fund raising drive going on, intended to raise money to produce a movie which will, somehow, facilitate the process of disclosure, wherein the world illuminati and alien presence will be fully disclosed to all.

you know what? it almost sounds as if the only thing SaLuSa needs to do is to join the "Occupy Wall Street" movement, maybe along with as many galactic federation of light members as are available... that would beef up the revolution a mite, i reckon.

SaLuSa could presumably simply show himself to us all, in physical or energy person, but prefers not to. instead of the galactic federation merely turning off their invisibility devices, money is being raised to reveal them to us through a motion picture. sure. fine. OK.

it is also claimed that there exists a world wide rail system  which  is incredibly fast and luxurious, but available only to the elite few. anyone who has driven around the united states might wonder where the rails are...perhaps, they, like the good and bad aliens, will soon be disclosed...

Girl's Baseball

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA has many faults, as cogently explicated by the Truthless Reconciler and American Explicator, but by damn she's got 'er good points too, and to ingore them would be remiss.

When america goes genius, she goes all the way, which is one reason why americans are inclinded to arrogantly and mistakenly call their country "the greatest in the world."

I met a beautifully blonde, heavily accented lady from russia, who answered my question "eet ess glate-ees clountry in vurld, so I move here." flattering for a foreigner to say that, but arrogant for an american to do so.

arguably america's greatest invention and contribution to the world is baseball..wasn't it the great french writer alexis de tocqueville who said "anyone wanting to know the heart and mind of america had better learn baseball."

that's why a baseball craze is sweeping the world. its why the new york yankees have an office in china. latin america, japan, china, and korea have all fallen in love with baseball, and soon so will russia, europe, and india.

the only thins missing is girl's and women's baseball.

its been tried before, and proven to work. see movie "A League of Their Own."  it didn't stick, though - it was just too far ahead of its time.

But no longer!  the  time has come for female baseball, in america, and around the world. hell, in afghanistan, there's a guyputig together an afghan women's boxing program! its off to a slow start, but by golly he's gittin' 'er done; odds are it will succeed.

now, if female boxing can flourisn , or even appear at all in afghanistan, female baseball can thrive in america, or anywhere else.

for one thing, its a better sport than boxing.

Winning IN America

Nine out of the most recent winners of the american national spelling bee have been Indian, not of the native american variety. people whose parents or ancestors are from india, asian variety.

this might be the least surprising development in recent american competitive culture. anyone who lives in an american college town can tell you that folks from india and pakistan are extremely scholarly, and extremely disciplined in their studies. same with chinese and koreans, for that matter.

hell, you can't get 'em to ever go with you to a good party. and they seem to watch american television only as a humorous occasional diversion, or for cultural comparison studies.

but it may be that they act this way only in another country, like america, instead of their own. it may be that they are studying abroad only by great good fortune and great personal investment in work and money, and so are especially determined to succeed once abroad.

my first semester in graduate school, i had two neighbors from india. great guys who invited me over for genuine, spicy indian food. it was delicious. they told me that if you were to put a show like "general hospital" on indian TV, nobody in the country would ever leave their house.

I didn't believe him then, thirty years ago, and I still don't. however, indian television does indeed have its own flourishing soap opera industry. so we know that the broader, mass indian culture is really not much more intellectually advanced than ours in america.

but when an ethnic group making up less than one one thousandth of the population wins an intellectual competition nearly every year, you have to take notice. it aint coincidence.

as competitive as americans are, its noteworthy when they fail to win at anything. of course, we are, after all, quite busy with our video games and tweets.
maybe americans are simply smart enough to understand how ridiculous competitive spelling is, though you tend to doubt it.

Savior Street Cred

IF YOU HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO, you might consider typing the word     SaLuSa
into google, and then clicking on any of the options. This should take you to a website called "The Galactic Federation"..and it is without doubt as cool a website as you're ever gonna see.

For one thing, its got beautiful, cosmic artwork, right up front. This "galactic federation" is allegedly exactly what the name implies: an organization of highly advanced intelligent beings throughout the galaxy, who know all about our earth, are here among us now, and are fully intending to save us from the nightmares of our current and future world.

And one thing you'll have to agree with: our world is full of nightmares, and more appear on the way, such that our very long term survival seems in great doubt. climate change, war, economic collapse, epidemics;

well, evidently this galactic federation agrees with me; that the world and the human species is in grave trouble, and needs saving immediately. and, speaking through a being calling itself SaLuSa, the galactic federation assures us that the process of salvation is well underway, and that incredible and wonderful changed are coming soon to humanity.

and hallelujah to that, eh? salusa is channeled by a guy named Quinsey. the question is; why does a being as advanced as salusa communicate to us all through a single person? why not establish undeniable credibility by communicating with us all directly, or at least, enough of us to put all doubt as to authenticity beyond question?

you'd almost be tempted to suppose that someone is trying to gain attention, or make money, some human, pretending to be some extraterrestrial. the arrangment with salusa invites such a suppostion.  salusa, indeed the galactic federation, might be well advised to make a more visible appearance to more people.

this, supposedly, is soon to come, as past of a general restructuring of the world, politically, economically, socially. poverty and war will become extinct, as will disease, and  misery in general, including political oppression.

make no mistake, we hope that SaLuSa is for real, the way we do with jesus and mohammed, et al. and it very well may be that they are all "for real", in one way or another. jesus never wrote a book, and salusa only talks in private to one human. saviors seem to need a little better marketing strategy.

Memorial Day, For War, Peace, or Fun?

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY, america, as we pay tribute to the roughly two million americans who gave their lives for our freedom. What they actually gave their lives for is a bit more complicated to analyze, so we'll call it "freedom", and move on.

what we actually do, of course, is take an extra day off from work, and have a good time, at the lake, at the river, at the park, and so forth. we travel a lot on this three day weekend, for fun. The actual memorializing seems to take place in a nice, tight, convenient little package, so as not to interfere too much with our good time.

memorial day almost seems a bit too positive, the way we celebrate it. maybe it should be a sadder, quieter, more prayerful, reverential and contemplative occasion. Perhaps we should consider the option of adding a component to memorial day; of commenorating the tragedy and futility of all war, and the dire need on our part to eliminate it.

war is competition for resources, based on the primordial fear of being without them. our extraterrestrial monitors must surely be amazed that humanity has not yet discovered the fundamental truth; that cooperation in developing ambiant resources results in the elimination of any need to compete for them in any manner whatsoever.

in other words, everything that we fight over is abundant, and easily accessible; our problem is that we simply don't realize it. land, water, oil, money; hell, there's plenty for all, as any brain can perceive. all we have to do is work together, and provide enough, but not too much, for all... but we refuse to.

one more possible component to memorial day of the future; memorializing, remembering, all the untapped resources at our fingertips which we through our stupidity and fear fail to cooperate in developing, instead chooing to compete for them in bloody insane war.

we honor and cherish those who died for us, even though, any by intelligent, enlightend reasoning, they died unnecessarily..

Early Retirement On Your Terms

ON THE MSN HOMEPAGE appeared a brilliant, one paragraph article suggesting that if you are old, alone, and penniless, like many americans appear to be on their way to becoming, you might consider the idea of retiring in a federal minimum security prison.

for real. check it out yourself. whoever wrote it is brilliant, and suggested but didn't answer a question which deserves answering; is this a good idea, or is it an indication of the sorry state of american society?

the answer, of course, is that it is indeed a good idea, and the very fact that it is a good idea is a clear indication, absolute proof, that  america is a very troubled place. in america we put more people in prison than any other country, per capita.

federal minimum security prisons, like the one martha stewart did time in, are actually rather "nice". room and board, health care, social activities, recreation, and all that. better than living on the street, or in a nursing home, eh?

as the baby boomer generation gets elderly, a high percentage of those born between  nineteen forty six and nineteen sixty four will be broke and alone. a little insider trading can take care of all that. of course, its hard to commit financial crimes if you're broke. so we'll have to think of something else.

a nation of prisoners, and a nation of elderly poor, in need of assistance. its a match made in heaven! or maybe somewhere else....

Introducing: SaLuSa!

NO, ON SECOND THOUGHT, creating a napoleonic  figure to lead the global masses in an uprising against the coming global corporate oligrachy probably isn't the best idea after all. Might be better  to increase awareness, and encourage grass roots action instead.

But, you'll have to admit, those napoleonic types sure have a way of getting things done. humans create tyranny for a reason, a reason which oft gang aglee...maybe right now in syria we've a gone a bit overboard in tyranny creation, wouldn't you think?

shouldn't the other seven billion of us calmly, but firmy urge the handsome syrian dictator and his hot but insane wife to quietly remove to, say, hawaii, and let syria join the twenty first century, politically?  just a thought.

like jefferson said, humans have an incredible capacity to suffer tyranny, an arrangement in which they willingly trade liberty for security. always looking for saviors, we are. religious saviors, political saviors, celebrity saviors, even extraterrestrial saviors, our newest twist.

the primordial savior search, coupled with the famed vivid human imagination, and its off to the races.

consider SaLuSa, a highly advanced, enlightened being from the Sirius star system, who communicates with us all, daily. sirius is the brightest star in the sky, and one of the closest to earth, so SaLuSa was from the beginning well positioned to interact with home sapiens.

SaLuSa speaks to us through several websites, including, soon, this one. any site that's any site's gotta have SaLuSa, and The Truthless Reconciler does not intend to be left out. we're looking for a savior as much as the next man, and this sounds like the real deal. of course, so do they all; they all seem, sound like a true savior...hitler, napoleon, caesar.....muhammed, jesus....lady gaga...

give credit where credit is due; we look hard, and we don't give up. we merely lengthen our savior list, and await results - from any and all sources...maybe SaLuSa'll work out...one can at least hope...

Workers of the World Unite!

EVIDENTLY EXXON//MOBILE, that giant of merging american corporations, has signed a deal to drill for oil in russia. undoubtedly everyone in the world already knows about this, including all the details, but when one shuts off one's cable television, and becomes lazy about clicking on headlines online, one becomes, shall we say, a tad ignorant?

so has such a deal been signed, or was my sleepy mind simply imagining all this one night with national public radio humming softly in the background...

one wonders how many billions of dollars it involves, and about the benefits to exxon - moblie, russia, america, and indeed the world..

nor can one help wondering whether it might be in everyone's better interests if the company drilling for oil in russia were russian, rather than american. or wait - is exxon mobile still american, or is it now international, above and beyond american, whose ownership and leadership no longer accepts exclusive american governmental jusrisdiction, nor for that matter, jurisdiction of any sort.

a corporation, entirely above, beyond, outside the jurisdiction of any government of any nation, or the united nations. another such corporation. then another. and another. a small elite oligarchy of global corporations whose only master is themselves, who have no obligation to obey any law of any nation, or all nations.

only a world government, with a conquering napoleon type leader as its head, can forestall such a future world...we the billions of "little people" must unite behind a caesar, or a napoleon, or a hitler, or a george steinbrenner, and fight valiantly against the emerging, merging global corporate oligarchy//dictatorship.

the sooner we do this, the better. we have litte chance of winning anyway...

It Makes a Difference

THIS MITT ROMNEY FELLER  running for american president is an interesting feller. was he the one cutting the other kid's hair in high school or was he one of the boys holding the victim down? did he initiate and instigate the incident, or was he merely a "passive" follower?

it makes a difference. I'm fifty seven years old, and i remember high school pretty well, and i consider one's actions in high school to be indicative of one's character and personality, decades later.

was romney a member of, or the founder and leader of a white upper class high school gang?  (I'm sure it wasn't a black ghetto gang.). these leader types come out early in life. i did some pretty wild things in high school, like drink and have sex, but i sure as hell didn't participate in any gang mugging....its alarming when somebody does.

recently, mitt told the moral majority that marriage is between a man and a women, so evidently that's where he's going to take his campaign. over the years, mitt has said anything and evertyhing anyone might want to hear on the subject. meanwhile, obama is out in favor of gay marriage.

obama's got the jump on mitt on this issue. every year, the country is more accepting of gay marriage. in the future, many different types of mariages are likey to spring into being, in our culturally evolving global community.

romney won't get the gay vote. so, beware, conservatives; change is the essence of nature. tradition, and the status quo, the essence of all conservatism, are ephemeral. cultural, including religious, moral, and philosophical evolution are as inevitable as technological advance.

true, these processes proceed more slowly in some cultures than others, but, they proceed in all, even cultures which seem to not change over hundreds and thousands of years. over time, stone age people cut their stones more accurately..

WE Have Come Far

NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO, you see people gazing intently into a hand held electronic device, whaterver else they're doing, they're staring intently at  a hand held electronic device.

...and so be it. it is, after all, this is the year two thousand and twelve, or twenty twelve, whichever you prefer. both are acceptable, so, whichever one you think it is, be openminded, not dogmatic.

i don't think this is quite the world i fantasized about in nineteen sixty five, when i was ten years old, and prone to fantasize about the distant future. i predicted that humans would be living all over the solar system by now, on the moon, on mars, with huge space stations...i was certainly wrong about that, unfortunately.

of course, hell....in nineteen sixty five, i thought that in the year twenty twelve i would be flying through the sky in my own jet car..

i remember believing, in nineteen seventy five, that one day computers, televisions, radios, and telephones sould be combined in one big screen, flat on the wall. i wasn't too far off with that one.

i would almost like to journey two hundred years back in time, and tell my hero and distant cousin davy crockett what lay two hundred years in his future, and why it was worth living and dying for...

but how would i do it? and was it?

well, i think it was. critical as i am of the human species and its past and current behavior, i truly believe that we, the human species, we are worth the trouble that brought us to where we are today, we ar worth all the misery of the past, as we are.  but of course, this is debatable...

maybe i sould start by asking davy how old his rifle was, and whether it was better than those used by his ancestors... then i would remind him that rifles are an example of progress, and he would agree. but would he believe me when i started talking about space travel, and hand held electronic devices of incredible power?  maybe not.

but for all our folly today, we have come far, and we've much farther still to go...

Are Foreclosures Really Necessary?

WE ALL KNOW ABOUT the foreclosure crisis, in which millions of americans lost their homes, and many more will in the near future, being as how the crisis is ongoing.

it almost seems as if a foreclosure should never happen; that every situation ought to be resolvable through refinancing. i met a person who was paying interest only on her loan, and had been doing so for several years. as predatory as that sounds, if a bank can do that, surely it can do whatever it takes to avoid any and all foreclosures.

if lenders were willing to refinance all distressed  mortgage  holders, then it might become a tad too popular to get into mortgage payment trouble...but surely there could be found a solution for that, too.

who deserves a refinance? people who have paid high interest, relative to the currnet market, but who have steadfastly stayed ahead of their payment schedule? those who, through no fault of their own, have become financially distressed through business failure or illness?

maybe a refinance favorable to the borrower should be available to such people, and refinacing favorable to the lender should be available to people whose financial woes are self inflicted, and plain stupid.

it just seems that forclosures ought to be a lot more rare than they are, even considering the bad economy. are lenders too willing to make unwise loans, and too unwilling to adjust them later, at the loss of profit? how much profit, if any, are lenders, as a rule, willing to part with, in the interest of keeping a good but temporarily and justifiably distressed mortgage holder afloat?

if lenders and borrowers were more willing to work together, foreclosures could become a rarity. one senses that lenders are more to blame than borrowers..

Let's Plant Trees!

THE ANSWER to all our problems, my friends, is to plant trees. For starters, one tree per person, or about seven billion. then, maybe, we could increase it to two trees per person. and since we'll have a certain number of super enthusiasts who will plant dozens, hundreds, or thousands, whatever goal we set should be very achievable.

I live in an area with many trees, naturally; hills, water, trees. but no matter where I go, I see places where a tree could be planted, where a tree should be planted, because, what else is going on in that spot? (nothing)

how many tress are there in the world? one tril? two? however many, if we double the current number, all our problems will be solved. global warming will be greatly mitigated, maybe even in time to save the environment and the human species. we could probably sustain twenty billion humans, if we did it efficiently, wisely.

between now and the time you die: one tree.

Seven years ago I bought a house that was brand - fire new, on a large lot that was a rock strewn construction site, without trees or grass. I took  one look and gave up. the place looked like the surface of the moon, lifeless.

But, bit by bit, one rock at a time, it began to shape up. (once you get to working, you can build momentum, and surprise yourself). eventually, i had planted twenty five trees, grass seed, bushes and shrubs. today, seven years later, i have a green paradise for a yard. the trees are all about ywenty feet tall, and growing fast; i live in my own litle forested wilderness.

let's do this to the whole planet!

A Few Questions

THE WORLD is in an economic mess, don't we agreee? starvation and disease, collapsing currencies, ecosystem progressively sickening, war.... you know the drill. hell, even in america one in eight people has trouble getting enough to eat, and the ratio is one in six among children. in america, we don't seem to put children first.

the greater the population, the greater the need for economic growth, to keep up. so yes, we must have economic growth, of which we currently have too little, but we perhaps should also ask ourselves: what is the limit to human polulation on this same size always planet, and what is the limit to per capita standard of living?

do we want 1 billion humans, each with a 5000 square foot mansion and two corvettes, or do we want 15 billion people, each with the same great wealth, or should we all have less wealth? or should we just not worry about it, let the wealth go where it may, and the human population do likewise? to plan, or not to plan...

if the population is too great, and the number of poor too great, and the number of wealthy too few,
many among the too numerous poor might take a notion to gang up on the few wealthy, and despoil them. can you see humans doing things like that?

shouldn't there be clothing manufacture in every country in the world? is there any in america?

maybe we need more capitalism, and more socialism.

Evolutionary Salvation

INSTEAD OF FIGHTING like grizzlies over liberalism, conservatism, socialism, capitalism, atheism, monotheism, and everything else under the sun, let us all presume the following: the millions of adherents of each of these paradigms are for the most part not stupid. there is at least some validity to all the various paradigms under the sun.

Once we get this through our thick skulls, let us take our openmindedization to its logical conclusion;
becoming eclectic, embracing all paradigms, seeing truth in them all.

we can pick and choose the best parts of each political philosophy, religion, paradigm, and synthesize new and better ones therefrom.

christianity and islam are the same religion. liberalism and conservatism are complimentary approaches to the same circumstances and problems.

socialism and capitalism? why , they work well together.

no system ever invented by humanity is perfect. flaws can be found in all, and in all of us. thus the process of evolution becomes our salvation. oh, that our morality, religiosity, and political and economic theory would evolve faster!

but of course, they are evolving fast, very fast. and this may be our salvation.

WE Must Get Started

THE UNITED STATES is in a hell of a pickle, and so is the rest of the world, particularly europe. longer life spans and lower birth rates are rapidly producing a much older american, german, japanese, and world society, a world in which a very high percentage of the population will soon be very aged , and will need a great deal of care. care for the elderly is becoming a big business in the united states, as america allows the titanic forces of capitalism to take part in the phenomenon.

human life span is tending to be mitigated by the obesity epidemic in america, the disease epidemic world wide, and war. but the mad scientifec scramble to prolong human life  proceeds, and perhaps should be tempered by sound philosophy, and used reasonably, as should all human science and technology.

we all want to extend our life spans, but must we do so with such passionate, unrelenting fervor, so as to produce a race of ancient but unproductive people? its a question which needs answering.

let us reslove to improve the quality of life for the greatest number, and let longevity take care of itself.

a well known socialist is investing in companies which provide such care, even though overall he is investing (betting)  in (on) the american stock market to decline...

people will have to work longer. that is, the lowest class of the working class will have to work longer, to pay for the staggering cost of all this. also, taxation of the wealthy will have to be used as a means of redistributing wealth to the poor, the consfiscatory policies dreaded by american conservatives shall indeed soon take place, world wide. sorry, billionaires. that's just the way it is.

progressive taxation, in which the most successful citizens support society the most, is inevitable, globally. it appears that the economies of europe and the united states are going to collapse, again, soon, which will throw the entire world into a depression, and result in the continuing ascension of china and japan, although they are barely faring any better themselves at the moment.

the problem is that there is simply too much money in circulation and not enough material wealth chasing it, and the money is concentrated too heavily. all this must change, and soon. humanity must increase production of its cumulative welath through capitalism and manufacturing, and must regulate the economy to intelligently utilize the new wealth thus generated by using socialism.

and we must do all this in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner. other than that, no problem.

and we'd better get started soon..

Descent

PEOPLE IN CONGRESS do not speak on as high a level as they used to. Nowadays members, on average, speak on about a tenth grade level. twenty years ago they spoke on an eleventh grade level, according to recent analysis.

the analysis is based on the idea that with each level upward, sentences become longer, and words have more syllables. certainly there is some truth to this; small children use small words and short sentences, but people who express high level thinking do not automatically use more complicated sentence structure and words, so the analysis has limitations.

on average americans communicate on about a ninth grade level and newspapers are written on an eigth grade level. members of congress no longer speak only to each other, they speak to the entire nation through television, so they are still talking a bit above us. but if we are patient, they seem to be on their way down to our level.

maybe when they get there, they'll seem to be making more sense.

if you read diaries of civil war soldiers with little or no formal education, you notice that the writing style seems sophisticated and highly educated. in the nineteenth century there was little to distract people away from the reading and writing basics, so even ostensibly poorly educated folks sound well educated to us.

there is no need to worry about this. overall we are far better educated than our ancestors, with a much larger body of information per capita. vocabulary and diction will doubtless always be a vital part of human communication. we write more books than ever, but we have less time and inclination to read them, due to increased options. on average americans read one book after completing high school, allegedly.

our seeming descent into illiteracy is illusory. we can trust our descendants to express themselves intelligently, because the more we complain about our own lack of it, the more likely we will be to reverse the current trend.

Marital Bliss

THE MOST DISTINGUISHING  feature of human beings is quite obviously their brilliant intelligence, and their ability to utilize that intelligence at all times to render sound judgments concerning how best to live their lives.

FOOLISH BEHAVIOR is essentially unknown among humans, but even so there are opportunities to makes our lives even more fulfilling than they already are. First, we should all get married as soon as possible.

everyone should get married on his or her eighteenth birthday or sooner. pick out a person to marry, and sign a contract promising to remain married to this one person forever, no matter what. assume not that death will do us part, but instead will perpetuate the contract eternally.

each day the married couple should devote themselves to the marriage, to the exclusion of all else. happiness consists in eliminating from one's life everything that does not pertain directly to one's marriage. the contractual obligations, clearly written on the contract, will serve as a perfect guide.

the more children, the better. if we humans can reproduce in sufficient numbers, we can finally find uses for all the natural resources available to us, and, with any luck, can so efficiently utilize the land that all other species of animals, which are mere annoyances, can be eliminated.

we might wish to consider arranged marriages, wherein small children, from the time they enter school and learn to read and write, can simultaneously prepare for marriage, and form an unbreakable bond with his or her future spouse.

a marriage should of course be a religious ceremony, ornate , elaborate, and expensive, sanctifying the nuptials in stone within the context of religious faith, to the exclusion of all other forms of belief. the more adamant one is in refusing to amend one's religiosity, the happier and more productive one is certain to be.

do not change marriage partners, do not change religious beliefs -  consistency, rock solid dogma, simplifies life and makes for happier beings basking in the glory of our peaceful, joyful lives...

Keeping Secrets

we should all be grateful that will smith and his son visited president obama at the white house recently, because it gave will a golden opportunity to show us that he is on a first name basis with barrack, and it gave the media something cute and harmless to write about with regard to barrack.

the curious teenager could not resist asking the president about extraterrestrials, in spite of his father's admonitions to the contrary. the kid even asked his father in advance the punishment for defiance, so he knew what was coming, and bravely, defiantly ploughed ahead.

the exact punishment meted out by the big man escapes memory, but suffice to say the kid has not been seen on the playground since.

obama further succeeded in fueling the enthusiasm of UFO enthusiasts, who jumped on the incident like flies on mutilated cattle. when the president said "whatever i know about aliens, i found out in this room", the games began anew.

the ET community  seized the moment. obama was neatly concealing and perpetuating the long kept secret of the american government, which knows much but tells nothing, while avoiding telling a lie to the adolescent.

it may be that the american federal government has aliens stashed away, and a wealth of knowledge kept in hidden cold storage since harry truman was president, but this very idea is ludicrous to anyone who has ever worked in government.

since the feds can't keep new wepons systems or cia activites secret, that beings from distant planets would remain hidden seems , at the very least, highly doubtful. the overthrow of the iranian government by the cia in 1953 and the development of the B1 bomber were also "secrets". but not for long.

if you happen to have knowledge about intelligent life on other planets, and you don't want it widely known, be careful to conceal it first and foremost from the american federal government, because if you don't, we'll all know about it in short order.

Same Sex Sex In Prison, Oh How Shocking!

WE ARE TOLD that something like ten or twenty percent of all prison inmates in america are sexually abused. as if this is some sort of shockingly new revelation. two hundred thousand former inmates report having bveen victimized by sexual violence, aka rape. is anyone surprised?

the obama administration pledges to tackle the problem, so consider the problem solved.

about nine years ago congress passed a law making it illegal to rape somebody in prison, some law with a catchy sounding name like the "unwanted sex in prison is a bad thing" law, or "leave your cell mate alone" law; (please remember that all federal legislation must have a catchy name.)

now it comes back to me. the law is named "when you plug you're a thug" law. yes, that's it.

when that law took effect nine years ago, the problem immediately vanished, because prison inmates became instantly fearful of breaking a federal law.

(Not.)

now here we go again, obama and congress, at it again, fixin' to do a bit more grandstanding for us. isn't our government delightfully entertaining? maybe this time they'll make violations punishable by imprisonment. or perhaps offenders will be deprived of "visitation" privileges. no more fraternizing with fellow inmate - consorts!  BACK TO YOUR OWN TEN BY EIGHT BOYZ!

"you can date, but you can't consummate." now that i think about it, that's what the law is named.

what in the ever loving hell do we expect, when we put anybody who is anybody in prison, including crack smokers, pot dealers, and martha stewart?

we lock up millions of men and women in overcrowded same sex buildings, in oh so close proximity, give them nothing to do, and supervise them, shall we say, "loosely"? we may as well install condom dispensers in every cell block, like we do high schools.

a quote from, i believe, H .L. Mencken comes to mind: "the fools would be humorous, were they not in such deadly earnest..

Sometimes..

BJORN BORG, of all people, once took a swing at a tennis ball, and missed it. It might have been the only time that ever happened, but it happened on television, which made it more memorable. he never said anything about it; he was probably trying to apply extra top spin, and got a bad bounce. if one of the greatest tennis players who ever lived can do it, so can the rest of us, we told ourselves, smugly.

a highly respected professor of american history at a major university authored a seminal work on LBJ, entitled "LBJ". a marvelously well researched and written monograph of surpassing scholarship, there is, however, a slight problem on an early page. the author says something to the effect "the president's blood stained the first lady's green dress."

those of us who recall seeing it all in horror will never forget that jackie was wearing a bright pink dress that dreadful day. the professor later said "i just plain missed that one."

about thirty years ago i was visiting a friend in the hospital, and i decided to wander across the hall and take a look at the nursery, in which were temporarily housed a couple dozen newborns, each looking adorable in pink or blue bassinets.

up strolled a young lady in a bathrobe, and stood next to me. we began conversing, and, for no discernible reason, without thinking, i pointed to one infant in particular and said "that one is especially adorable".

her eyes lighted up and she responded "that one is mine"! by now the infant is at least thirty years old, and perhaps still adorable. if I'm ever stranded by the side of the road, i hope either lady or daughter of lady happens to drive by..

there's an old cajun saying: "sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you."

Breast Pollution

THERE IS A NEW BOOK entitled "Breasts" written by a lady who got the idea while breast feeding her infant. she happens to be a research scientist, and thought it would be inteesting to have her breast milk chemically analyzed, to find out precisely what her baby was ingesting, if anything, other than pure mother's milk.

the female breast is of course the object of universal notoriety in human culture, so such a book might be considered long over due.

so she sent a sample of her milk to germany, the fatherland of chemical analysis, and the results were shocking.

she was told that her milk included trace amounts of  flame retardant, jet fuel, pesticide (DDT), and a chemical called BPA, which is used in the manufacture of plastics to harden them.

naturally she began wondering where all this was coming from. her only conclusion was that these chemicals are ambiant in the general environment, and that fatty tissue, which behaves somewhat like a sponge, absorbs them from common objects such as furniture, plastic items, and jet airplanes.

the brain and liver are also primarily fatty tissue. there is no reason why trace chemicals shouldn't be found in those places as well, and men are as vulnerable as women, presumably.

girls are reaching puberty earlier, possibly partly due to hormones injected into beef, and  men  are developing breast cancer, a new phenomenon.

cancer, which is in reality a collection of several diseases, is a modern disease, and breast cancer is second only to skin cancer in frequency.

what are we doing to ourselves? when will the high price of our modern chemical laced culture force us to change our ways?

i once knew a man who considered himself a "naturalist"; he refused to make use of anything which involved unnatural, processed chemicals.

he scratched his knee in a bicycle mishap, refused antibiotics while cleansing the wound, contracted gang greene, was forced to have his leg amputated, and died. true story.

we need to reduce our dependncy on chemicals, but we need to do it intelligently, selectively, not comprehensively.

otherwise, we will all become each other's nursemaid.

Denial

WHEN a person place or thing is so hopelessly, deeply in debt that any possibility of recovery appears impossible, the situation is described as "bankruptcy". The free market soultion to bankruptcy is to simply allow the debtor to languish eternally in debt, repaying whatever crumbs it can manage.

But that isn' t adequate. A permanently deeply indebted class satisfies neither debtor nor creditor. Thus modern civilization socialistically creates a process by which the perpetually downward spiral is stopped cold in its tracks.

By any reasonable standard the united states of america is a bankrupt nation, the victim of its own determination to rule the world and provide assistance for people left out of the corporate capitalistic dog fight.

Bankruptcy is painful, too painful for an entire nation to endure. The alternative, the pertual downward spiral, allows for the continuation of denial, the postponement of disaster, the head remaining beneath the sand.

soon again the great dog and pony show of formally increasing america's indebtedness will supply yet more morbid entertainment, our favorite flavor. and although there is no longer any alternative, much ado will be made about it.

at least one out of every eight american children hasn't adequate nutrition, but we can comfort ourselves that twelve aircraft carriers patrol the world's oceans, protecting us from....what? they only run about a million dollars a day to operate, per boat.

if we want to sell off the american empire, and stop helping feed the hungry, and raise taxes on us all, we can begin to reduce the staggering debt, and eventually balance the american bank account, and save the integrity of the currency system.

too painful. unthinkable. better to raise the debt ceiling again, which we will, but only after an acceptable amount of strutting, fretting, and posturing.

then we can all relegate to the back of our minds the question of what could life have been like had we behaved reasonably intelligently in the first place..

The Best President

EVERYBODY has something to offer, including political candidates, though there are times when that seems a bit hard to believe. Anyone wanting to serve, or lead, ought maybe to be given the chance to so do.

If only we could combine the best traits of us all, the perfect composite human. Or at least get political leaders that way. Right now we would need to put Mitt Romney and Barrack Obama together, and combine their best features, beliefs, characteristics, traits, into a gloriously effective national leader.

Rom-Bama, or perhaps Obam - Rom,, a composite synthesis, based on the assumption that differences are not inherently antithetical, need not be viewed as competing opposites, but rather, as compliments.

Relativism replaces absolute truth, reconciliation replaces conflict, and thus emerges an american presidency born of truthless reconciliation.

The Rombama administration would wage no war against big business, but would enact a reasonable level of regulation to guard against corruption. the composite president would not condemn venture corporate raiding capitalism, would would give a big five to successful practitioners thereof...

...while making all voluntary donations to the federal treasury tax decuctible.

..abortion would not be federally or state-ally banned, but strongly discouraged

...the american military would be neither too weak, nor too strong and expensive.

foreign policy would be based on diplomacy, not military intervention, but the military would stand eternally vigilant for defensive purposes.

the national debt would be steadily reduced by reasonable austerity, and small temporary tax increases, to expire when that debt is near elimination..

the best american president is a wishful thought.

Constant Campaign

OBAMA isn't waiting for mitt romney to get the republican nomination to begin his campaign. the president is out after mitt now, attacking hard, in what seems destined to become a true knock down drag out campaign.

in his new videos, obama describes romney as a big money corporate raider, who makes great money for himself by buying companies, firing the workers, putting the companies out of business, and
moving on. like a carnivore.

one of romney's defenders calls the ad unfair, and says that romney's job was to make a profit, not to save or create jobs. how illuminating! since cannabilizing companies is romney's "job", that makes it OK. what a powerful defense.

romney's camp retaliates by claiming that obama used the federal stimulus money to give fat government contracts to his big money political supporters, who then squandered it.

time will tell, maybe, if that particular accusation is true; the claims made by obama about mitt most certainly are true. after all, if one chooses to be a corporate raider, one ought to stand tall and take ownership of it.

and just think, its still only may. the election is in november. we have six more months of this carping campaign, hearing these accusations, over, and over, and over again...ad nauseum. do you ever wish that america had a six week election period, like sensible countries?

not here. here, in america, the political campaigns never stop, they are eternal, and there is a never ending cut throat competition for power, rather than any wise nad beneficial use of power for the common good. when you spend all your time running for the office that you already hold, you haven't much time to meaningfully serve the people.

but in america, they don't matter anyway...

Politics and Thoughts

EINSTEIN once said that his favorite activity was thinking, and that's believable; he seems to have been pretty good at it. WE all know there are different levels of thought processes; the chaotic, simplistic thought of a toddler, the sublime conceptualizations of einstein.

Low level thinking,  high level thinking. Researchers of human intelligence use those terms. A simple illustration would be as follows: count to ten. Then, count to ten in alphabetical order. the second task requires higher level, symbolic, conceptual thinking.

researchers researh everything under the sun; a few of them have concluded that lower level thinking results in political conservatism, while higher level thinking tends towards liberalism.

this need not be construed as an insult to conservatives. the difference beteen high and low level thought is not qualitative, but symbolic and conceptual. you may have noticed that conservatives often accuse liberals of living in a world of theory, and that they do. liberals tend to be more abstract, conservatives more concrete.

conservatives often accuse liberals of emotionally based thought; which means, compassionate thought, based on theory rather than reality.  liberals accuse conservatives of being stupid, which is code for low level, concrete thinking, which is not the same thing as stupid.

conservatives embrace concepts like status, hierarchy, authority, tradition. liberals emphasize concepts like rights and tolerance, and, above all, change.

it is easeir to turn a liberal into a conservative than a conservative into a liberal.

the final conclusion?   it takes all kinds.

Mother's Day In Corporate America

MOTHER'S DAY was an idea which was promoted by several ladies (mothers), such as Julia Ward Howe, in the eighteen seventies and eighties, but it really took off as a successful holiday when the hallmark corporation got on board in the early twentieth century, promoting mother's day cards.

so mother's day is corporate owned, like christmas and everything else. but, so what? in what way does this fact diminish our opportunity to celebrate and cherish our beloved mothers? Likewise fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents.....

....every day is a holiday, and mother's day a gentle reminder that cherishing mother every day is the path to enlightenment. and besides, one need not succumb entirely to capitalistic corporate control.

one can fashion one's own mother's day card out of construction paper, after the fashion of a grade schooler, ignoring the fact that the very materials out of which your homemade card is made are of corporate manufacture.

one can email or call mom, ignoring the fact that the internet and phone service are provided by, yes, corporations, and very large ones at that.

if nothing else, one can visit mother in her home, which by now she night have lived in long enough to have paid for, putting her, at least for the moment, beyond corporate control.

but unless you cook her dinner using vegetables grown in your or her own garden, if you use food bought at the grocery store, you are, once again, back in the loving arms of  our corporate masters. but so be it, and so what? happy mother's day!

Individual Religions

RELIGION is without doubt among mankind's most sublime and noble pursuits, both an expression of reverence for nature and life, and an attempt at explaining it. At the same time religiosity, and attitudes about it, have brought about a horrendous amount of conflict and destruction throughout history, including the present day.

maybe the world started out with only one religion, and it spread, and branched off into other versions. or maybe from the very beginning every small independent group of humans had its own religion, distinct from all others. whatever, today there are at least eleven thousand different rdligions in the world, and no one is sure whether the number is growing.

all religions come into being, thrive, then decline and wither away, like their human progenitors. within a few hundred years probably most of today's varieties will have vanished, just as numerous religions from the past are now extinct.

a world dominated by a few large and powerful religions confronting each other as enemies is the worst possible scenario, and is exactly our situation. the worst problem is of course the relationship between christianity and islam, and  their mutual animosity is even more reprehensible considering that the actual doctrinal differences between the two ar actually quite minor.

there are thousands of religions in the world, and within the major faiths thousands of subsects. within each parish are individual people each with a uniquely singular way of looking at reality.

since human religions are so fragmented anyway, why don't we simply complete the process, take it to the ultimate conclusion; that we are all different, and approach GOD differently. that we each have our own religion, whether we know it or not.

Goethe said "when I realized that everyone invents his own religion, i decided to invent my own."

why don't we all agree that there are no organized religions, because there are seven billion individual ones? then we could proceed from there, and get along, or not. not only should everyobody have his or her own unique religion, whether we like it or not, everybody does.

Do We Have Too Many Laws?

SOME TOWN in new jersey has either already passed an ordinance, or is strongly considering passing an ordinace making "distracted walking" illegal. The  law would be intended evidently to crack down on texting and cell phoning while walking in public, because all kindsa bad things are happening, world wide, not just in new jersey, to people who do such things.

an entire video genre has emerged showing people walking into water fountains and fences while staring at miniature electronic devices. its really quite humorous, and it would be a shame to eliminate that sort of behavior, or even cut back on it, forone because its hilariously entertaining, and secondly, anyone doing that deserves what he or she gets. but sometimes walkers get hit by cars, which we must try to prevent. must we ? can we?

my god how many laws do we need in this country (america) protecting us from ourselves?  in new york city restaurants are not allowed to serve saturated fats. good heavens. Distracted walking? Does this mean that if a guy is walking down the street with his arm around a beautiful girl, and his eyes gazing lovingly into hers, he is breaking the law?

there are towns, especially in the american south, that want to pass laws restricting where sexually oriented businesses can locate, particularly relative to churches and schools. the federal judicial system has pretty much ruled that such restrictions on legal businesses are unconstitutional anywhere in america.

this is the kind of ruling which motivates conservatives to cry "judicial activism!" and "legislating from the bench!", when federal courts overturn local laws they like.  but what about laws conservatives don't like, such as city smoking ordinances for private businesses? would they cry foul if these were overturned by the big boys? someday we may find out. in the meantime, power to the people, and to the communities they form!  but  power to the federal courts when they prevent local lawmakers from enacting tyranny!

TORNADO SEASON is here again -  tornado season my soon be here everyday - and we are being comforted by government agencies and researchers who tell us that the best thing to do when a torndao approaches, other than go to a storm shelter, is to wear a helmet.

You read that right. The best protection against injury or death in a tornado, other than a storm shelter, is a helmet. Evidently most tornado injuries and deaths result from being hit in the head with fast flying rubble. Makes sense.

Prepare to be told, every spring, year after year, for the rest of your life, that you must obtain a tornado helmet, must keep it in an easily accessible place, and must practice grabbing and putting it on rapidly as part of your monthly tornado drill.

we are reminded that the campaign to wear seal belts has been ongoing for years, persistently beaten into our brains by a supposedly caring government, and that as a result we now all wear seat belts, at least those of us who are fearful of getting busted up, or busted.

the truth is that the government cares nothing about our safety and well being, but rather, about having control over our safety and well being.

will we eventually be required by law to own and use a tornado helmet when local wind speed exceeds say, 70 MPH?  if we are unable to afford one, will a government issue be provided?

what kind of helmet is best? what kind will be required? will we be allowed to choose our own style?which kind would be  most effecient, protectively? construction site? football? military? football helmets might be best; they can be outfited with unbreakable plastic face masks for further protection, and can be decorated with authentic team decor, pro, college, or high school.

AS long as i can wear a chicago bears or arkansas razorbacks helmet, i might not even care what hits me.

Communication, Or NOt

AMERICA is a culture which has forgotten, or is forgetting, how to communicate. By this I mean that we americans don't speak to each other effectively. messages get lost, misunderstandings occur.

there are several reasons for this. the primary one is the increase in the number of americans and in the technology of communication. simply put, there are more of us, we all have access to more communication opportunites, and we communicate more, and have more to talk about, which speeds up communication; resulting in more people saying more to more people.

they say it faster, louder, and with far less regard to the audience. turn on your television (as if americans need to be told to do that) and notice how in movies and television shows people take turns talking, and utter nothing but the most most clever phrases.

then notice that on live television talk shows, like the sunday morning political shows, they all try to talk at the same time, often, and have to be verbally restrained by the host. telephone conversations in america often result in both participants talking at the same time, and not caring.

how many conversations do we have in this country in which each participant is talking about something  entirely different? american culture is loud, fast,  aggresive, and, it appears, angry. it is becoming difficult in america to engage in a conversation with anyone without being interrupted in mid sentence, and there was time when that was unacceptable.

how much longer until we start yet another war, or a war here, among only ourselves, rather than in some foreign country?. we the american people might like to resolve to become better listeners and more considerate speakers.

that, and a little economic improvement, might lighten our spirits and make us less angry, and more gentle. there was actually a time in this country when people behaved courteously. let us return to that time poste haste.
