Doing Good, Blindly
MY NEW NEIGHBORS, a young couple from California, announced their intention of erecting a privacy fence, which I hate, and which I made plain to them. They'll probably build it anyway, and my hope is that they will maintain it sufficiently to avoid its eventual deterioration. It amazes me that people go to the expense of building privacy fences, then do nothing to preserve them. I've no desire to live inside a brown box, cut off from humanity, no desire to lose the natural beauty of my neighbor's yard. The upside is that if I choose, I can use their fence as part of my own fence, should I decide to get a dog. My new neighbors are about thirty years old, and they have a twenty year old dog. Their first day in town, the dog wandered off, and since he is deaf, blind, and partially crippled, we all feared the worst. I liked these people, they seemed friendly, and their concern for their missing family member was palpable. So, I went looking. In this friendly small town, most of the neighbors went looking. Frankly, I assumed that the old dog has wandered off somewhere to die, but there he was, walking along the highway, heading back to California. it is good be be a hero, even if you really aren't one. But in the eyes of my new friends from San Francisco, I'm the cat's meow. Nobody should have to say farewell to a beloved pet in that tragic manner. This lady had gotten the dog when she was ten years old, and is now thirty. Can you imagine what she must have been feeling? Her depression has turned to ebullience, and so has mine. And, five'll get you ten, that if I really don't want that privacy fence, it won't go up, and furthermore, I'm willing to wager that I will be free to walk through their yard any damned time I want, on my way to the senior center. but you know what? i no longer care about the privacy fence. What will be, will be.But when I hear an elderly, meek bark or two, coming from the other side of my new brown box, I can at least smile..............................PLEASE SHARE THIS WEBSITE WITH YOUR FRIENDS.
