THE TWO YOUNG attractive ladies at the liquor store, mandy and shyla, seemd to be a bit taken aback when they thought they had discovered that i had named my two new female kittens after them.
...actually they had disvered nothing of the kind; i had merely chosen their names because i thought they would make cute kitten names, and because the newest stray kitten, shyla, was indeed quite shy, at least compared to the other two strays i have recently taken in, mandi and jake.
jake was named after a character in a john grisham novel, "A Time To Kill". But again, it wasn't so much a amtter of naming a cat after someone, as it was finding inspiration in names i encountered in my daily life.
Maybe we should never name anyone after someone else; a fresh new start for all! Especially public buildings; it might be better to give buildings names which glorify us all, rather than a wealthy benefactor, or some dead politician.
...at least ten percent of americans say they prefer dogs and cats to other humans, and that number somehow seems low. I suspect it is. When the question give three choices, dogs, cats, and humans, rather than lumping dogs and cats together in one category, the numbers for humans go way down.
...a friend of mine was having a quiet evening at home with his cute dog maya, when suddenly my friend's twenty year old son came by unexpectedly for a visit. Happy and escited, maya ran up to greet him at the door, as dogs will do, and the twenty year old human told the ten year old dog to "get down and go away".
That's when my friend, in his early fifties, older and wiser, really stepped up. He said "son, why don't you say something to maya other than just 'go away' ?" ...indeed, why not. Why not give the sweet pet a good girl greeting, or a nice girl, before the go away.
Like they say, it really doesn't take as much effort to smile as it does to frown. IN all momentary encounters, why not make them pleasant? "Is not life short enough?" asked goethe. "Should we not join hands with those who go our way?"
Amen to that, brothah.
