Defending Ourselves Against Our Own Mothers

ON THIS SITE  are many advertisements, often of a politically conservative nature, which is a positive contribution providing interesting food for thought. One of these ads has a picture of an angry looking president obama, with the words:

"Obama won't defend the unborn. Will you? Click here to reverse roe v wade." Sure makes it sound simple. A click of the comupter mouse, with enough clicks joning in from across the land, and constitutional law will be changed, a mistaken supreme court decision will be made right.

Assuming this ad is clamoring for a constitutional amendment, its backers should consider that the american constitution is perhaps the most difficult constitution to amend of any in the short uncertain history of democracy.

A quick review of the proceedure for amendment reminds us that not only do three fourths of the states have to approve it, but a whole bunch of other stuff has to happen as well, which partially explains why the U.S. constitution has been amended so seldom.

And so course, collecting clicks in the hope that the supreme court itself will see fit to reverse a decision made forty years ago by its predecessor members is nothing but a useless exercise in futility; supreme court members are given lifetime appointments in order to avoid precisely this sort of public and political pressure.

And the  biggest question of all; precisely against whom are we being called upon to defend the unborn? Obama? Is the black man with the islamic middle name preparing new attacks against the infants of america, using primitive african weaponry? (Conservatives seem to fear and loathe the middle name, and its implications, above all else.)

But the bizarre but true answer is, there is only one enemy to defend the unborn against; against their own mothers. This raises the obvious question; do we really want to defend people, born and unborn, against their own mothers?

My inclination would be to defend the unborn against every conceivable threat - except their own mothers. The relationship between mother and child is sacred territory into which i, or anyone else, should be very very reluctant to intrude .

Just so we agree; you aint gonna defend nobody against nuthin', especially any unborn, against their own mothers. You'll have nothing to do with that. Only the mother herself will. What you may do, successfully or otherwise, is attack something, namely, the legal system in its current state, and good luck with that.

That is of course, unless one happens to be a  crusading conservative activist with an advertising budget. How privileged, to have the power to determine the proper relationship between mother and child.
