IF ONE DIDN'T KNOW BETTER, one might almost think that america's wealthy conservative class is determined to prosecute an ongoing war against the war. During the clinton era, right wing christian-militia jesus guns and money types engaged in a valiant struggle to eliminate property taxes.
Presumably the plan included home schooling all children, or private schooling them; public education has never been a favorite of the far right. They don't have organized prayer in public schools, so why attend them? Individual, secret, quiet prayer, the kind jesus advocated, is not showy enough, perhaps. It does nothing to enhance one's social status.
Property taxes survived; there is still enough sanity left to thwart the more fatuous conservative capitalistic, darwinistic schemes. Ever undaunted, the right winder's plan now is to eliminate state income taxes. After all, they unfairly burdern the wealthy, without whom job creation is impossible, so goes the mythology.
all i know is, even though my personal income has never amounted to much, i still manage to save and invest, no matter what my tax burder is, and i strongly suspect that if i were owning and managing a big business, and needed new empolyees, i would somehow find a way, regardless of property, income, or any other kind of tax. America's taxes are not high, contrary to conservative propaganda.
They, (the jesus guns and money folks) also want to eliminate corporate taxes, to free up the engines of production for enhanced trickle down job creation. Keep worker's wages low, corporate profits high, and upward flows new wealth.
the revenue would be made up with sales taxes, maybe even a federal sales tax. everyone must purchase food, clothing, and shelter; sales taxes allow the poor to contribute their fair share, say those who favor regressive taxation.
If everyone knew the difference between progressive and regressive taxation, which type would have the greater appeal to the people at large? Chances are, like everything else, it would be a split along rich and poor lines. the middle class doesn't count, becuse it no longer exists. But the poor, who will always be among us said the savior, still outnumber the rich.
