THE SYRIAN CIVIL WAR offers yet another example of how desperately people who possess power want to cling to it, and how reluctant they are to relenquish it. Assad could retire and live splendidly, whiling away his retirement on some hawaiian beach, luxuriating in the sun and surf with multiple mint juleps and his gorgeous wife.
the united states would be perfectly happy to subsidize this. wouldn't you? why not, it would save a lot of lives...
but no, assad just has to stay in power, because his nation simply cannot get along without him, his power is legal, and his opponents are law breaking terrorists, seeking to usurp rightful, divinely ordained authority.
we'll see how indispensable his legitimate, divinely inspired rule seems when he has reduced his country to rubble.
and the rest of us are no different than assad, not really. we all struggle for power, and, upon gaining it, cling to it tenaciously. its sometimes a very subtle process.
has anyone ever, upon leaving your presence, told you to "be good"?
have you ever wondered exactly what that means? when someone says that to you, you feel like saying: "do you have any reason to think i am not already being good? or that i would suddenly do so because you told me to?"
people think they're giving the ultimate advice when they say that, apparently. actually, to be told that is an insult. and, a power grab, on the part of the person who says it.
humans grab power constantly, and variously. just watch assad over the next few weeks. watch obama and romney. or, better yet, watch yourself, and those with whom you communicate...
