THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF PEOPLE, those who pretty much like things as they are, (conservatives), and those who don't, (liberals). whenever a conservative seeks political office in the united states, the first comment he or she will make is that "i am a true conservative". as if this in itself is qualification for office holding.
to be conservative is a proud thing these days. to be liberal is shameful.
liberals never make speeches claiming proudly to be liberal. it just isn't done. it won't get you any votes, because conservatism has successfully convinced people that liberalism is a bad thing. forty years ago conservatism was bad, but ronald reagen turned it around. now liberals hide behind words like "progressive", hiding from the term "liberal".
common sense should be enough to tell us that both conservatism and liberalsim have merit, and limits, and that neither is sufficient unto itself to quality anyone for anything.
does the world we live in need change, or should it be encouraged to remain as it now is? surely the answer to this is self evident.
wouldn't it be better if we all stopped wearing our ideology like a badge of honor, and stopped even thinking of ourselves as entirely liberal or conservative, and instead accepted ourselves as ideological hybrids? we are all a bit of both, eh?
every conservative wants to change something. every liberal wants to maintain the status quo in some area of endeavor.
if we can all reach deep within ourselves, and appreciate our own completeness, we can learn to look at the world from the viewpoint of others. this would enable us to open our minds the ideas of those with whom we disagree, so we can do something better than tear each other to shreds.
