Either Or

EITHER THE ECOSYSTEM IS DYING, OR IT IS NOT. either the environment is deteriorating, and global warming will become obvious over the next few decades, and the haman race will be in desperate straits; or not. we still don't know for sure. soon, though, we will probably have a much better idea.

and whatever the case is will determine the nature of politics, indeed, of cultural in general, all over the world.

suppose we are doomed. (in theory). suppose thaqt over teh next5 few decades our situation becomes worse, and worse.... in that case, a terrified humanity will have lost faith in science, progress, and democracy, and will turn instead to religion, theocracy, superstition, conservatism,  and authoritarian institutions.

say, for instance, that over the next few decades it becomes apparant that global warming and the deterioration of the environment is under control, reversing, not a major problem, and the future stretches ahead for humanity into limitless glory, prosperity, and happiness.

in that case science will gain its rightful place at the top of the chart, humanity will regain its faith in the possibility for progress,  a spirit of liberalism and change will prevail, and democratic egalitarian ideals will flourish, while religious fanaticism will dwindle, and traditional religions will evolve into more modern forms.

so let's just wait and see what happens...
