Empire of Dreams

THE UNITED STATES is absolutely bound and determined to remain, militarily, the most powerful  nation in the world, and to ensure this the U.S. spends more on the military every year than the next ten nations, in order, combined, including russia, china, great britain, france, and germany.

much of the american military effort goes into high technology; trying to develop ever more powerful and effective weapons. and it works like a charm. witness the patriot missile system, which worked well in the gulf wars, however many of those there were. beyond a certain point, one loses count.

consider drone missiles, with which america presently terrorizes pakistan. every few years a faster jet fighter plane comes rolling out; what is it now, the F20, or something like that?  makes the F4 seem stationary, and F4s are fast; fast enough to sell to other countries.

the united states has a thriving business selling slightly outdated military hardware to friend and foe alike. its good money, and besides, why worry about who has your old weapons, when your new ones can deal swiftly with them?

the united states insists on remaining the world's mightiest nation because, one, it can, and two, it considers itself the most virtuous nation on earth, endowed by god with the divine right to make the world right.

most americans either believe this great lie, perpetuated by the military industrial corporate brainwashing complex, or simply don't care.

the fact that the united states is utterly bankrupt, entirely unable to meet its financial obligations, sixteen trillion dollars in debt, seems to mean nothing to american militarists.

there is a certain comfort to having been born into the mightiest nation since the roman empire. it gives one the sense of being protected by an infinitely good and powerful strength.

because of its great military might, the united states either controls the united nations, or ingores it, and acts  independently and illegally, without consequences, depending on the situation. but the united states never follows or cooperates with the U.N.. one wonders whether this is the best arrangement for securing world peace. one tends to doubt it.

thus, even while surrounded and protected by all this power, perceptive americans nonetheless feel a faint sense of impending trouble, as if somewhere, in dark corners, forces are gathering to work against the interests of the american empire of dreams...
