Going In Drag
Formost of my life i would only infrequently hear the term "drag", or "going in drag",or:"drag queen", without really knowing what any of it meant. I had the vaguest of ideas. Recently, with all the controversy about going in drag, or whether drag shows should be legal, I've learned a little bit. My two basic questions have always been, and still are: "why on Earth would anybody do that"? And, "What's the big deal"? Both questions have obvious answers. The drag culture, like so many aspects of human culture and art, is merely a cultural expression of sexuality, in particular, homosexuality. Why not? Heaven only knows there are abundunt forms of heterosexual forms of artistic and cultural expressions, not only in American culture but in most cultures in the world. Our music, our movies, our clothing fashion; you name it, its been thoroughly heterosexualized. A few gay bars here and there, and a little cross dressing aint gonna hurt nobody, redneck rightwing evangelical Christians included. Throughout human history, and throughout the world today, mainstream majority heterosexual culture and people hate gay people and hate drag culture. Human ivilization always has been an remains a tyranny of hetero over homosexuality. Compred with many if not most countries today, gay people and gay culture are tolerated comparatively well, and, if not accepted, gaining more acceptance in the mainstream culture. Islamic, African, and Latin American nations tend to be very intolerant of homosexuality, and many have laws strictly forbidding it.In the United States, thank goodness, we have for several decades been moving in a more tolerant, progressive direction. Obviously we have a long way to go in Ameria, in terms of being open minded, tolerant, and inclusive. The current direction of teh Republican party is demonstrably, perposefully oposed to this progress, and in most parts of the country, are vigorously trying to reverse it. But they won't succeed; they are on the "wrong side of history", as we like to say, and will not turn back the clock.
