Going Along With Sis

MY BIG SISTER, older if not necessarily wiser than I, made, admittedly, a very good point about Donald Trump and his political supporters. I can understand, said she, being a Republican, (I cannot). And I can understand wanting to elect Republicans with a conservative agenda. (again, I cannot). But what I cannot understand is wanting to elect Donald Trump to another term as U.S. president in 2024. (Bingo, sis.) She continued: I am not nearly as liberal as you, little bro. Truth be told, I am somewhat of a centrist moderate, with as much agreement for the conservative agenda as the progressive. But after all that has happened, after the huge election lie, the carefully planned and orchestrated attempt to remain illegally in power by overthrowing the American government, after all the lies, the hate speech the.. - she could and did go on, but by now you get the pont - what person in his or her right mind would even consider sticking with Trump, rather than finding and giving support to another conservative Republican politician with at least some shred of decency, moral integrity, and intelligence.? Then we compared notes. She remarked that of all the idiotic things Trump has said, and there are many, her favorite is that: "Even if the climate has changed, it'll change back". That's a hard one to beat, for two reasons. First, his, and his supporter's general denial of climate change is in and of itself sheer idiocy, and becoming more idiotic with each passing out of control weather day. Secondly, if there is one thing that is obvious, its that the cat, so to spaek, is out of the bag, the carbon is in the atmosphere, and it aint goin' nowhere, its staying put, unless we actively do something to remove it, and, therefore, ergo, the climate change is not, repeat not, going to "change back". I was hard pressed to outdo her nomination for most idiotc Trumpism, but I had to try. "Windmill cancer" comes to mind. Also, his assertion tht George Washington's army captured every airport in colonial revolutionary era America is a solid choice. Then too there was the time when he praised the friendship between the United States and Italy as dating back to the time of Julius Caesar. Well, you be the judge. You'll have to admit, there are some really good "doozies"to choose from. But the "bottom line", to use that horrible expression, is this. One of Trump's professors at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania not long ago decsribed Trump as "the dumbest sonofabitch I ever had in class". what he didn't say is that Trump was most likely also the most morally and intellectually bankrupt. And therein lies the crux of the matter, the "rub", as Skakespeare might have said. How in the living holy hell can any reasonable self respecting Republican even consider supporting Trump when, even considering the generally low caliber of intellect available within the party, there are political candidates available who are at least morally superior to snakes, and less dumb than doornails? In a photograph a man holds aloft a sign which reads: "Trump voters: Its Ok to admit that you were wrong". Andindeed it is. There is nothing more noble than the admission of one's errors, and a determination to correct them. But don't hold your breath, as we like to day. People who have maintained their support for Donald Trump to this late date are by now utterly incapable of changing course, and admitting their lapse in morality and judgment. They are blinded by pride, and a fear of loss of self esteem, and the esteem of others. They thus keep supporting the same corruption, expecting better results. That is precisely the definition of insanity.
