Where Liberals Hang Out
HARVARD IS THE PLACE to go to college, if you can get in. You don't have to have any money; Harvard gives scholarships based not on academic or athletic ability, but rather, on need. People who need financial help get financial help. People who dont need it, don't get it. The Kennedys have given a bundle of money to Harvard, as have other rich people. Still, you have to get in, and the way to do that is the make straight A's in high school, get a great score on the SAT or ACT test, and generaly show a lot of intelligence and creativity. That's what makes Harvard so great. All students are required to take a wide varitey of classes, and to participate in a wide variety of activities, sports, etc. Harvard students tend to be very socially aware, that is, aware of what's going on in the world. In the late nineties, a group of students At Harvard organized and demanded higher pay for the university's janitors, who were not well paid, and often had to work two jobs to support their families. This, at a university sitting on an endowment of twenty billion dollars. At first the administration was reluctant to pay any attention to the students, and all that did was motivate the students to do more to attract attention. They began having energetic, colorful, fun rallies on campus at which janitors would speak about their plight, and millionaire students would lecture about social injustice. Movie stars Matt Damon and Ben Afleck, both of whom attended Harvard, showed up to lend support. Afleck's father had been a poorly paid janitor at Harvard, and Ben spoke about that. When the administration still wouldn't negotiate, the students occupied an administration building on campus, while hundreds of others camped out on the lawn. Finally, the powers that be raised the janitor's wages considerably, and did the same for all low level employees. Harvard, like most American olleges and universities, is known for being a hot bed of political liberalism. Why would this be? Sccordig to some conservatives, its because an insidious liberal conspiracy has gained control of the education system, and the media in America. A more likely explanation might be that colleges and universities are places where intelligent, well educated people hang out, hence, liberals.
