Seeking Fame, and Feigning Indignation
BRUCE JENNER won the decathlon in the 1976 olympics, then proceeded to capitalize on his achievement, financially and famously. First, the mandatory picture on the Wheaties box. Then, appearances on television shows, numerous commercial endorsements, and then the requisite movies. Exactly what makes a great athlete a good actor is a mystery which has yet to be solved. His biggest publicity coup to date has been his marriage into the nationally famous Kardashian family, of reality television fame. In short, Bruce Jenner is a man who always wanted to be famous, worked hard at remaining famous, and continued to want to be famous long after becoming so, proof that he enjoys it. Not everybody does, of course. Bruce Jenner is a man who cares what he looks like, and who wants to be seen, by as many people as possible. At the age of sixty four, he looks like he's about thirty, evidently due to multiple plastic surgeries, face lifts, hair colorings, and so forth. Because of all this, he spends a lot of time being watched by the legendary "paparazzi", that much maligned underclass which, according to the rich and famous, are the bane of civilization. The other day, Jenner was in a car, and the National Enquirer people were right behind him, as usual, just the way he likes it, just what he has always wanted, and gotten. But suddenly he erupted in anger, got out of his car, and started yelling obsceniteis at the "journalists" in pursuit. Lucky for him, he didn't try to hurt anybody, and land his handsome vain butt in jail. It might have done him some good if he had. Jenner is possibly intelligent enough to understand that he has made his own bed, and now he lies in it; but evidently not. His anger should be directed at himself, for creating a situation that he seems unhappy with. Or is he really unhappy about always being watched? Was his outrage fake? Was it merely another one of his attentin geting publicity stunts, like the rest of his life? It very well might have been, since everything else about him is. If the world were to suddenly ignore him, he would probably wither away in misery, feeling abandoned. So here we go again. Insecure little person craves attention, expends enormous effort and energy seeking fame, gains it, has a bad day, and takes it out on innocent people who are merely playing the celebrity game the way insecure little person intended all along. Pathic. Britney Spears gives reporter the finger. Alec Baldwin attacks camera wielding yellow journalist. And now Jenner. On and on. bear in mind that every spoiled brat celebrity who throws a temper tantrum has, every day, an opportunity to deep six celebritydom, and go off to some remote place, and live like a real person. But they never do that, do they? They simply cannot kick the celebrity ego drug habit, even when it gives them a hangover. And heaven forbid that we should all suddenly get a life, and start ignoring these prima donnas. Good thing we don't have enough sense to do that; the process of withdrawal might kill them all.
