Mother's Day In Corporate America

MOTHER'S DAY was an idea which was promoted by several ladies (mothers), such as Julia Ward Howe, in the eighteen seventies and eighties, but it really took off as a successful holiday when the hallmark corporation got on board in the early twentieth century, promoting mother's day cards.

so mother's day is corporate owned, like christmas and everything else. but, so what? in what way does this fact diminish our opportunity to celebrate and cherish our beloved mothers? Likewise fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents.....

....every day is a holiday, and mother's day a gentle reminder that cherishing mother every day is the path to enlightenment. and besides, one need not succumb entirely to capitalistic corporate control.

one can fashion one's own mother's day card out of construction paper, after the fashion of a grade schooler, ignoring the fact that the very materials out of which your homemade card is made are of corporate manufacture.

one can email or call mom, ignoring the fact that the internet and phone service are provided by, yes, corporations, and very large ones at that.

if nothing else, one can visit mother in her home, which by now she night have lived in long enough to have paid for, putting her, at least for the moment, beyond corporate control.

but unless you cook her dinner using vegetables grown in your or her own garden, if you use food bought at the grocery store, you are, once again, back in the loving arms of  our corporate masters. but so be it, and so what? happy mother's day!
