RELIGION is without doubt among mankind's most sublime and noble pursuits, both an expression of reverence for nature and life, and an attempt at explaining it. At the same time religiosity, and attitudes about it, have brought about a horrendous amount of conflict and destruction throughout history, including the present day.
maybe the world started out with only one religion, and it spread, and branched off into other versions. or maybe from the very beginning every small independent group of humans had its own religion, distinct from all others. whatever, today there are at least eleven thousand different rdligions in the world, and no one is sure whether the number is growing.
all religions come into being, thrive, then decline and wither away, like their human progenitors. within a few hundred years probably most of today's varieties will have vanished, just as numerous religions from the past are now extinct.
a world dominated by a few large and powerful religions confronting each other as enemies is the worst possible scenario, and is exactly our situation. the worst problem is of course the relationship between christianity and islam, and their mutual animosity is even more reprehensible considering that the actual doctrinal differences between the two ar actually quite minor.
there are thousands of religions in the world, and within the major faiths thousands of subsects. within each parish are individual people each with a uniquely singular way of looking at reality.
since human religions are so fragmented anyway, why don't we simply complete the process, take it to the ultimate conclusion; that we are all different, and approach GOD differently. that we each have our own religion, whether we know it or not.
Goethe said "when I realized that everyone invents his own religion, i decided to invent my own."
why don't we all agree that there are no organized religions, because there are seven billion individual ones? then we could proceed from there, and get along, or not. not only should everyobody have his or her own unique religion, whether we like it or not, everybody does.
