Do We Have Too Many Laws?

SOME TOWN in new jersey has either already passed an ordinance, or is strongly considering passing an ordinace making "distracted walking" illegal. The  law would be intended evidently to crack down on texting and cell phoning while walking in public, because all kindsa bad things are happening, world wide, not just in new jersey, to people who do such things.

an entire video genre has emerged showing people walking into water fountains and fences while staring at miniature electronic devices. its really quite humorous, and it would be a shame to eliminate that sort of behavior, or even cut back on it, forone because its hilariously entertaining, and secondly, anyone doing that deserves what he or she gets. but sometimes walkers get hit by cars, which we must try to prevent. must we ? can we?

my god how many laws do we need in this country (america) protecting us from ourselves?  in new york city restaurants are not allowed to serve saturated fats. good heavens. Distracted walking? Does this mean that if a guy is walking down the street with his arm around a beautiful girl, and his eyes gazing lovingly into hers, he is breaking the law?

there are towns, especially in the american south, that want to pass laws restricting where sexually oriented businesses can locate, particularly relative to churches and schools. the federal judicial system has pretty much ruled that such restrictions on legal businesses are unconstitutional anywhere in america.

this is the kind of ruling which motivates conservatives to cry "judicial activism!" and "legislating from the bench!", when federal courts overturn local laws they like.  but what about laws conservatives don't like, such as city smoking ordinances for private businesses? would they cry foul if these were overturned by the big boys? someday we may find out. in the meantime, power to the people, and to the communities they form!  but  power to the federal courts when they prevent local lawmakers from enacting tyranny!
