In 1965 president johnson started the "war on poverty, and during his speech he used the word "negro", pronouncing it "niggra". Nobody thought much of it then, including your author, who was ten.
Along comes 2012 and rush limbaugh, who, while pointing out that the war on poverty has not been won, placed special emphasis on johnson's use and pronunciation of the "N" word.
And limbaugh's point was? possibly, to demonstrate that johnson was a closet racist, and, since johnson was, all democrats are. your guess is as good as mine.
but the war on poverty has most definitely not been won, has not worked. rush is right as rain about that. the sixty four thousand dollar question is: why not? Because liberalsim doesn't work! declareth el rushbo, the self proclaimed lovable little fuzzball. (he really is all that, by the way). because liberalism doesn't work? say what?
do welfare programs automatically create a permanent under class, or does darwinian capitalism automatically replace those lifted out of poverty by welfare with newly impoverished people?
maybe a little bit of both. what would the economic landscape look like without the war on poverty? much the same, one suspects. the poor will always be among you.
well, they sure as hell will if we don't do anything about it, now, won't they? and they sure as hell will if we all let remain in place the very system which creates them, eh?
the poor create their own situation, regardless of the system, you say? certainly, to a certain point.
however, the extant economic institutions and patterns of behavior into which we are born are not without some degree of influence on our fates, no? we make ourselves rich or poor through our actions as individuals, verily, but if you're an athlete or an artist or a scholar or a laborer, it certainly matters the manner in which the country you live treats athletes, artists, scholars, and laborers.
rush limbaugh, for example, is darned lucky that he was born into a country in which voices on radio which spew hatred are greatly valued.
