AMERICA has a unique and quaint system in which a person becomes famous through some grand adventurous exploit, then exploits the achievement by becoming an entertainer, usually an actor, often portraying himself.
Buffalo Bill spearheaded this concept. He was living out in the wild west, killing so many buffalo that everyone was amazed and made him famous for it. Back in new york, his fame was such that a broadway play was written about him, which bill, responding to an invitation, traveled to broadway to view.
Eveidetnly he liked the production. he convinced the producer to let him take the lead role, and play the part of himself himself. it turned out to be a great idea; buffalo bill turned out to be a pretty good actor, good at portraying himself, he made a lot of money for himself and his producer, and he went on to own and star in the famous "buffalo bill's wild west show", which played all over the world, in front of aristocrats and royalty, for many years.
Wild Bill Hickcock made the same journey to new york to watch himself on stage, but wasn't at all happy with what he saw. during the performance, he started making loud rude comments about the innacuracy of his on stage portrayal, and at length become so upset that he jumped up onto the stage, and beat up the actor portraying him. he was subdued by new york's finest, and spent the night in in the lock up.
Wm. Cody took advantage of an opportunity, and wild bill failed to take advantage of an opportunity, as did davy crockett. davy was portrayed on stage on broadway quite successfully by a well known actor,, and crockett himself was quite effusive and personal, an actor at heart as a politician, and probably could have made good money giving lectures and portraying himself on stage. he never did.
O'J. Simpson didn't miss the boat when his cinematic ship came in, and neither did Jim Brown, Babe Ruth, or a whole host of famous folks who, though of dubious acting talent, simply could not resist the opportunity to further enhance what they already had; a big name.
