Mitt Romney said something shocking. He said that he understands that free enterprise can't solve every problem. (he never said exactly what, other then capitalism, he thought might solve some problems). But I never thought I would hear him say that.
Mitt's a conservative, and there's nothing wrong with that, contrary to the opinions of most of my liberal colleagues. But its good to see anyone show some open mindedness, and giving consideration to the ideas of those with whom they disagree, rather than attacking them.
It was incredibly open minded, for him, and shows that he has hope, that he is more than a wealthy man who has always been wealthy and therefore understands nothing about the rest of us.
I wonder if Mitt could be enticed to admit that cooperative economics has a place in the modern world, that greater economic equality among the population and universal economic survival is universally beneficial. Would Mitt admit that wages need to be kept, by government if necessary, above starvation level?
Maybe he would. You never know. Mitt might make a good democrat yet. Mitt might even admit that sometimes socialist countries do fairly well.
Take Denmark, for example...They have a seventy per cent tax rate, but all health care and education are paid for, and there is help with food and housing, but few need it, because jobs pay well, with universal employment, and the weathiest Danes are only three times as wealthy as the poorest Danes.
In Denmark,You find a janitor making eighty thousand a year, living between a doctor and a lawyer. Those who go to college get paid to go. Hurrah for Denmark.
Its a prosperous country, with a higher per capita standard of living than the United States, like the rest of Europe, and a low crime rate, low poverty rate, and a higher happiness rate than the U.S., with fewer resources, but far less black hole military spending and empire building.
Mitt Romeny is right; capitalism does not have all the answers. Denmark has capitalism too, but its well regulated, and the wovles do not eat the sheep. Maybe, just maybe, "socialism" is not a dirty word, and has, a least a little bit of merit. And maybe there's hope for mitt yet.
