The Amazing Cell Phone

Its easy to sometimes take for granted the incredible advances in science and technology which have recently, and are now taking place. For example, older people who were long accustomed to bulky, unmovable, unreliable desk telephones now chatter away on cell phones while driving, walking down the street, sitting in the bathtub, as if its the most ordinary thing in the world, which it is fast becoming.

It could be argued that cell phones have already had, and will continue to have more impact on the world than any other scientific technological invention. Within my lifetime I expect almost every adult and child in the world to own one.

Neither the pen, nor the typewriter, nor for that matter the automobile had such widespread use and impact. With  a cell phone, everyone has global connectivity, immense computer power, and instant access to all the knowledge in the world, accumulated over many centuries.

The world has never had any situation remotely close to this before. The cell phone really is changing and will change everything more and more, from the way individuals live their lives, to the way wealth and power are spread across the globe. The cell phone is the ultimate democratizing technology.

When I was a child I was a great fan of Star Trek, (Wm. Shatner version), and I was extemely envious of the ship's crew, beaming down, firing phasers, talking on pocket communicators, and so forth. Evidenly other people felt the same way; the cell phone was invented by a man who got the idea, so he said, from watching "Kirk to Spock" Star Trek.

What other object do you carry around with you all the time and use all the time and take for granted? The fact that we  now take cell phones for granted just shows how incredibly they have changed the world.

Yet, when did  you acquire your first cell phone? If you're an adult, it was probably relatively recently in your life. It seems probable that people all over the world do react, and will continue to react the same way,  quickly incorporating the cell phone into their lives, and soon thereafter taking it for granted.

There will soon be people who obtain a cell phone  ven though they have never had a telephone or computer of any kind, or even access to a library. How will they react? The answer proves how revolutionary cell phones are, and will continue to be.

(hint: hand a cell phone to such a person, and within a week, he or she will have learned enough about how to use it, and will be using it often enough, to feel fairly confident at it, and will expect to keep learning more every day, and will start, soon, taking it all for granted.)
