The Case Against Competition

Its been a tough few months for football coaches. Sandusky and his alleged sexual molestation of children, the wrecking of coach, motorcycle, and girlfriend, and the paying of players by NFL coaches for injuring opposing players. What next?

Retrospectively, you can almost see the inevitability of NFL coaches paying players to injure opponents. Who knows how often it has happened, and whether it will happen again?

Rather severe penalties were probably appropiate. Football is too violent already  without    artificially magnifying the violence.

YOU could almost see the pay for pain phenomenon coming, because  american  society is not becoming less violent, quite the opposite, more so.

The media feeds us ever more fantasy violence, because it makes money. WE don't cancel our cable and satellite TV in large enough numbers to make any difference. Instead, we lap up what we're fed, unquestioningly. The intensity of competition in all areas of american life is astonishing.

WE compete for supremacy in physical beauty, musical talent, social status, and the immersion of american culture in sports is more a symptom than a cause.

Consider taking a look at a book entitled "The Case Against Competition", author forgotten. It makes a good argument that all competition is harmful. Debatable though this is, american society will remain sick with anger and violence as long as ALL competition is widely considered beneficial. Because, most assuredly, some forms of competition are extremely harmful.
