Changing our Morals and Values

College football coach achieves great success, wealth, and fame. Suddenly, it is revealed that coach has extra-marital affair with co-worker, tries to cover it up, is revealed, and fired.

True story. True, really, many times over, the story wherein too big for his britches sports figure seeks pleasure, and is willing to break the rules to do it. This is an epidemic in american society; breaking the rules in pleasure seeking.

Several remedies come to mind. Instill a greater respect for society's rules within its citizens. Teach morality in schools, and model good behavior in the entertainment media.

A more radical solution, and far less popular one, but perhaps more effective, would be to change our social morality and rules to more closely reflect current reality in our society, and to allow for greater acceptance of pleasure seeking.

Our judeo-christian heritage teaches us that sex is always a sin, except in matrimony. Maybe we should reconsider this ideal. WE were once extremely intolerant of divorce, now we accept it more readily, and maybe we should accept it more readily still.

Maybe we should consider different concepts of marriage, suah as "open marriages", or multiple person marriages.  MAYBE.

Sometimes individual people need to suffer the negative consequences  of disobeying social morals. Sometimes, social morals need to be changed. Likewise, social values.

Maybe we as a society spend too much time and effort turning people into celebrities. It might be better to bring people down to size by limiting their fame, and limiting their wealth and power.

Maybe we should just ignore celebrities, and think of other ways to improve our modern morality and values, which, if we are humble and not arrogant, we will admit are not perfect.

Far from, in fact. It never hurts to be open minded.
