Taking Freedom Too Far, Ignoring Cooperation

THE POPULATION OF ITALY IS SHRINKING, as the birth rate plunges to the lowest level ever, and the government has launched a propaganda campaign urging young people to marry, be fruitful, and multiply. Advertising on television, radio, and wall posters glorifies the wonderful life ahead for those who start families young, and keep adding to them. Meanwhile, people are living longer, so the percentage of the population engaged in the work force is shrinking, and so is the economy. The same pattern exists throughout the rest of Europe, and in Japan, Russia, China, and North America. The answer is to allow tends of thousands of refugees to immigrate from population dense, impoverished, war torn nations such as Syria, to replenish the work force and build the future economy. Meanwhile, we eagerly await a bright, shiny future in which population scientists have accurately determined to optimum population level for every country in the world, and best way to distribute work, wealth, and political power, and we all live in a world without drastic economic mood swings, political upheavals, and mass migrations of desperate impoverished people. The dirty little secret is, we already live in such a world, a world in which scientists have pretty much figured out the best way to do things, in terms of human organization of labor, goods, services, and wealth. Sociology, although a relatively new science, about a hundred and fifty years old, is in many ways the most relevant perspective from which to study ourselves and our interconnected world. sociologists quite naturally propose many different theories, but there is general agreement among the profession that the current human population is somewhat above optimum, that resources have traditionally and are currently being allocated and utilized with gross inefficiency, and that even a modicum of international planning and cooperation could greatly alleviated our current problems and go a long way towards creating a global civilization acceptable to all. the problem is nationalism, and a widespread belief among Americans in particular that any form of cooperation is tantamount to a surrender of national sovereignty, and individual freedom, plus the misguided belief that personal freedom is the solution; if all well intentioned people are allowed to pursue their goals with as little interference as possible, resources will magically, miraculously end up in the most efficient, equitable distribution. Most sociologists would beg to differ-----------PLEASE SHARE THIS WEBSITE WITH A FRIEND. WE WANT TO ENCOURAGE ORIGINAL, CREATIVE EXPRESSION,THANKS!.
