You're on Your Own in an Aging World

OF ALL THE PROBLEMS which either already best, or soon shall beset the united states in  particular and the wrold in general, old age is among the most challenging. In short, the birth rate has slowed down world wide, and people are living longer, so that within a couple of decades about twenty five percent of the population will be over sixty five, and, according to current norms, probably retired, or wanting to be. 

There is now a trend in the U.S. for people to try to retire at a younger age, while simultaneously social security is delaying and cutting benefits, out of necessity. Will we end up with a huge percentage of the population not working, and expecting everyone else to support them?

Well, if you have worked hard, made a lot of money, paid a lot into the social security system, you can retire young, live long, and perhaps not worry about outlasting your money, and having to live off others.

However, a vast majority of current and near future retirees are not in this enviable situation. Not only have they faild to work hard, earn and save a lot of money for retirement, but they have not really paid a great deal into social security, at least, not nearly enough for them to retire early, live long, and pay their own way.

And the way the american currency system is going, and the global economy, it might not even matter if you have saved a lot of money; you made be hard hit in retirement no matter what you do.

So it may be that governments around the world will have to take drastic steps, eventually. We may end up with a culture in which retirement is once again, as it was before, unknown, government pension programs might become extinct, and  death panels might select a certain number of elderly for "liquidation".

Any species of life needs a sustainable population of largely healthy organisms. That means moderate, sustainable birth rate - and death rate. Trying to get all of us to live far beyond ripening is all well and good, if we have the resources to do it. And it looks like, its going to be every man for himself.
