IN AUGUST, the obama campaign raised one hundred and fourteen million dollars, while the romney campaign raised about one hundred and eleven million. The importance of this is that romeny has been kicking obama's butt in fundraising, and the democrats seem to have scored a bit of an upset, at least for august.
These figures are only the formal campaign party fund raising, and do not include the political action committees, which collect countless more money, with no law requiring that its sources be disclosed, due to the disastrous supreme court "citizen's united" decision a couple of years ago.
Billionaires can pump millions of dollars into political campaigns, totally unconnected with the actual campaign itself. Political Action Committees, such as the one headed by conservative activist carl rove, shield themselves from disclousre by classifying themselves as "charitable organizations", which, in a sense they are.
Eveyone knows that the system is broken, and badly needs fixing. The point is not that the supreme court system allowing political actioncommittees to purchase elections was mistaken; within the context of the constitution is may be viewed as quite proper.
The problem is the united states constitution itself, which is a partially out of date document that whould be amended, or preferrably replaced with a more modern effective version, possibly modeled after the old one. The new constitution needs to include an amendment elliminating money from politics.
Thomas Jerrefson, who advised madison on the constitution, believed that every generation would need a new constitution, appropiate for changing times. He suggested a new document about every twenty years. madison agreed with him.
When we get our new constitution, let's include nine. words: "the sale or purchase of political advertising is prohibited."
