SCHOOL DAYZ, SCHOOL DAYZ! ..or not....at least, not in chicago, at the moment. Teacher's strikes seem strange these days, so rare are they. Partially because of the growing impotency of the labor movement, party because of the enormous improvement in teacher's pay and benefits over the past several decades, the teacher's strikes which were all too common in the nineteen sixties and nineteen seventies are nearly obsolete.
The chicago teachers are being offered a pay raise which seems substantial, something like sixteen per cent, but their complaint is primarily about benefits. It can be argued that teachers should never strike under any conditions, as crucial public servants, and the same argument could be made about firefighters and police officers.
The mayor of chicago, a close associate of president obama, and president obama himself, are both willing to allow private schools to play a larger part in american education; it may be that they both see the handwriting on the wall; maintaining extensive school systems is becoming too expensive in a country which is hopelessly in debt, with a declining standard of living and a crumbling currency system.
Within the foreseeable future school districts, school buildings, and all associated physical plant may become extinct, and education might well move into cyber space, on the internet. The teaching profession itself may become obsolete, particularly in a country which increasingly cannot meet its own health, nutrition, and infrastructure requirements.
Online education could save the american people untold billions of dollars. the teachers in chicago might be doing nothing other than getting what they can, while the getting is still good.
