Priority Shift

"THAT MARS IS INHABITED by beings of one sort or other is as certain as it is uncertain what those beings may be." With those dramatic words, american astronomer percival lowell announced to the world the existence of a network of canals on Mars.

Lowell theorized that mars was a dying planet, drying up, and that the inhabitants must be building the canals he saw, to bring water from melting polar ice caps to the rest of the planet. He drew elaborate maps of mars and published them in 1906 in his epic but misleading book "The Canals of Mars"

These canals, we of course know now, are purely natural phenomena, which only seem to be artificial constructions when an imaginative mind notices how straight the lines are ( but not as straight as lowell thought).

H.G. Wells wrote his great sci fi novel "The War of the Worlds", about a martian invasion of earth not long after lowell created a mars craze, amd since then science fiction and space exploration have been quite popular.

So popular, that the mars rover currently moving around on mars is sending back great pictures and information about the red planet, rewarding our interest, showing what a great country the united states is, and how impressive human beings are, in terms of intelligence. the rover is also showing something else: that although big time fancy life does not seem to be present on mars now, it may have long ago been present.

The human race should redirect its efforts away from  military spending, and towards space exploration, because it would pay off, hugely, sooner than one might think. We now know that there are earthlike  planets everywhere, and that there is probably life everywhere as well. Its worth it to stop killing ourselves, and to start working together, to find out about it.
