Chasing Mitt Romney, all the republican candidates except Ron Paul are flling all over themeslves trying to prove greater conservatism, because they know, or think they know, that that's the way to win the rebublican presidential nomination. And it may very well be.
The problem is, it may not be the best way to win the general election. The best way to beat Obama might be to move as much to the center as possible, while pointing out differences between you and the president.
Clinton and Obama got elected doing exactly that: they won the democratic nomination by being very liberal, then won the presidency by being very moderate.
This is a centrist country, politically, and the independents decide national elections. Obama, believe me, is far too conservative for his liberal base which got him the democratic nomination, but Obama's moderation might win him a second term, because he knows he no longer needs the far left base, but instead, the independents.
Romney's mix of liberalism and conservatism would be a far more formidable opponent to Obama than a hard line conservative.
That's why people say there isn't a bit of difference between the two American political parties.
