Move to the Middle
Reelection looks likely for Obama right now, because the republicans will have a relatively weak candidate, and the economy is improving, or at least, it seems to be improving.
Romney's problem is that he has been too liberal for conservatives, and Obama can argue that Mitt is a candidate or the wealthy, particularly after Romney's unfortunate comment that he doesn't care about the very poor. Independent voters might tend to prefer Obama's attitude to that.
The liberals are angry with Obama, presumably because they think he hasn't been liberal enough. The well known author Chris Hedges even goes so far as to say that Obama is no different that any of his republican counterparts.
Obamacare is a watered down version of the single payer socialism that the far left wants, and the president doesn't directly attack the wealthy class, as the far left would have him do.
But Obama knows that they have no choice other than him, so he has moved to the middle, intending to keep the white house the same way he did before, and the way everybody does, the way it has to be done; move toward the middle and get the independent vote.
