Wanting To Know
I HAVE RARE BLOOD, so I am told. Its called "anti CMV negative", and it seems to mean that my blood is completely virus free. I found out about this only after I have been donating blood for thrity years; better late than never. Its hard for me to imagine that my blood is virus free, considering some of the women I have been with, but, they're (Red Cross) the experts. What it means is that my blood can be given to infants, or people with a high degree of vulnerability. When they need my blood for some emergency, they call me, and I go in. The same is true of my platelets. Special super charged platelets, something about antibodies. When somebody needs a hot shot of platelets in order to survive, in I go. The other day they called me in for a platelet emergency, and as always I dropped everything, juggled everything, and headed in, a trip of about fifteen miles. When I was about halfway there, my phone rang, and it was them, telling me that they found out that I was ineligible, because I had donated too much recently. This angered me. I was already halfway there, and somebody obviously needed my platelets, bad. I told them screw it, I'm coming anyway. They said no way. We argued just a bit, and at that point I raised my voice just a smidge. I asked them how easy it would be to find somebody else like me. They said they could do it, but it might take a little time.I told them they had better find somebody very soon, or I will come in, no matter what I feel great, and by god, nobody will stop me. By this time they had probably noticed the angry determination in my voice, and that I might be just a little bit irrational at the moment. They promised me that would keep me posted. I never heard from them again. Still haven't. It sure seems like I have a right to know how it all turned out. My best guess is that privacy laws prevents them from telling me. Maybe they could tell me if they found somebody, and leave it at that. If anybody died because of my ineligibility, they'll have hell to pay.
