Stealing Passwords
TWO MILLION PASSWORDS were stolen by hackers a couple of weeks ago, passwords to services like google, and other mainstream internetters. If the hackers have been caught, there has been little or no mention of it in the media. Presumably, all two million passwords have been changed, and everything is all right. Everything is all right, until, when? Until the next time millions of passwords are hacked? How much crime is possible on the internet? As much as circumstances allow, obviously. Crime is a void always waiting to be filled, a skilled trade the supply of which equals the demand, or opportunity. However much crime is possible, that's how much crime there will be, on the internet, or anywhere else. Maybe we should all stop relying on passowrds so much online. I for one refrain from doing a lot of things on my computer simply because of passwords, and my aversion to them. The very thought of giving anyone my credit card or debit card number online fills me with terror. The idea of buying something from amazon dot com frightens me- I still haven't done it, even though millions of other people have, without harm. Even though I want to. This business of having a different password for every application, and changing passowrds regularly...well, screw it. Nobody is crazy enough to be willing to do that, even though we know we're supposed to. We refuse to be enslaved by a culture of passwords! Let's all live in glass houses! Ancient wise proverb say: stealing is prevented by having no possessions. Cash can be stolen, passwords can be stolen. What are we to do? We'd better do something fast, because if we don't, the hackers will wipe us all out.
