Bringing Back the Ones We Killed

NOT ONLY ARE WE GOING to reach out and find life on other planets, (if we want to), we're going to reach back in time, and bring animals back to life, animals which became extinct many years ago, or a few years ago. Jurassic Park is going to come true, but it doesn't have to be about dinosaurs. We can bring back wooly mammoths, or passenger pidgeons. Word is that a baby wooly mammoth is so adorably cute that no human can resist its charms. Up until the twentieth century, the skies over the United States were full of passenger pigeons. One fourth of all North American birds were passenger pigeons. There were five billion of them. A flock of them would often darken the skies for miles. Even though it seems incredible and hard to believe, we Americans killed tham all, hunted them to extinction. During slavery days, they were hunted and fed to slaves. Throughout the nineteenth century passenger pigeons were killed and sold as meat to poor people, often disguised as beef or pork. The last remaining passenger pigeon was a female with a name which died at the Cincinnati zoo in 1914. That must have been a very sad event for all concerned. The passenger pigeon was evidently a beautiful bird. I feel cheated to have missed out on them. Its our loss, and we miss them. But now, we can bring them back. Almost now. What they need is evidently a few finishing touches on their big bring back the animals machine, and we're good to go. Over the past ten thousand years the human race has killed off dozens of species of animals. Its been a veritable slaughter. Now, we can make amends, reverse our mistake, and get a second chance. And that doesn't happen every day.
