Ice Storm House Arrest

THE GREAT AMERICAN late Autumn ice storm kept me in my house for five days, and amazed me with its size; the size of the United States, big, for a storm. It also taught me what its like being on house arrest. I learned what it feels like to be Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears, or Paris Hilton, when they've been bad girls. The only difference is, I'd much rather be locked inside their houses, rather than mine. Please, place me under house arrest in Paris Hilton's house! After a while you start to get used to it, and don't mind it. Then, you start to prefer it, and that's when you're in trouble. It makes one wonder how one could live in Michigan, or Russia, or anyplace north of Arkansas. Are these super sized winter storms going to become more frequent with global warming? That's the prediction. I spent the first two days terrified that the electricity might go out, and I'd be sitting there, with my three cats, in a house getting colder by the hour, with zero degrees outside. I've done it before, and its no fun. Last time it took four days to get electricity back on. Four layers of clothing, in your own house, in absolute dark, hour after long winter hour. No fun. The day before the storm hits, everybody in town rushes to the store, and empties it out. We'll have a much higher standard of living on this planet in the future, if we spend our resources dealing with climate change, and human needs, basic needs, repairing storm damage, growing food, making useful things; rather than fighting with each other. Military spending does not stimulate the economy. It saps wealth out of the pockets of everyone, saps the economy, increases the horrible global poverty rates. Considering how hard it is for our species to survive on this planet, just to live in our harsh atmosphere, oooooooour extreme weather, under a deadly blazing star, takes everything we've got, and we really can't afford to fritter away what resources we have. Its a nice feeling when house arrest is over.
