OBAMA'S REELECTION VICTORY, if one uses a little imagination, can be seen as a victory for the commom man over the powerful corporate oligarchy and his spokesperson, rich man romney. After all, obama got his billion dollars partly through contributions from four million "little people".
The blunt reality, though, is that obama is every bit as much a property of the big corporations as any other politician, because one cannot be a successful political candidate in a country where six billion dollars were spent on political advertising for the presidency alone, without jumping on the corporate bandwagon.
Those seven magic little words come to the back of the mind: "the purchase of political advertising is prohibited". Or even nine words: "the sale and purchase of political advertising is prohibited."
But that would be big government, wouldn't it? Regulation of the economy. Limiting the inalienable right of the american citizen to spend money to buy or sell whatever he or she sees fit, except marijuana, other than in colorado.
So, for the foreseeable future, political power in america will be a commodity, bought and sold, purchased by the highest bidder. Obama, the champion of the poor, raised and spent at least as much as mitt, and thus owes at least as much to his wealthy benefactors as mitt would have.
For the first time since roosevelt in nineteen forty, a president has been reelected even though the unemployment rate increased during his term in office. For the second time in american history, and first time since eighteen sixteen, there will be three two term presidents consecutively (jefferson, madison, monroe, clinton, bush, obama).
And we have the same old problems to solve. Too many pigs at the pig trough (lincoln), and too many wolves and sheep (jefferson). May the dear lord bless our predisent, and us all.
