AFTER ALL THE NOISE and excitement of the american presidential election campaign, it may not, after all, really matter much who wins and who loses. That, at least is probably the opinion of prominent writers like sam harris and chris hedges, and most certainly the opinion of the late great gore vidal.
These three very liberal geniuses all seem to agree that there is really only one political party in the united states, the party of property, with two wings, the conservative democratic wing and the ultra conservative republican wing.
The corporate elite long ago gained total control over the united states, say the three authors, and both obama and romney are willing corporate front men. The rest of us are the peasantry. Only concerted long term struggle will ever change this arrangement.
Whether one believes any or all of this is purely a matter of choice. One must admit, however, that there is a certain narrow conformity to mainstream american social and political thought.
The good news is, change is bound to come, change is inevitable, because the current system cannot sustain itself, and will collapse, sooner or later.
Sounds ominous. Sounds painful. And what kind of change will it be? A transition to a glorious new age of prosperity and equality for all, or a dark feudalistic dictatorship of religious fanaticism?
Well, in any event, I think everyone will be glad when the election is finally over, so that the perpetual compaign for power and competition for wealth can begin all over again.
And, if nothing else, we can at least pretend that our vote matters, and that it makes a difference who wins. If nothing else, we can at least fight to keep our present system, corrupt as it may be, rather than allowing it to descend to even lower depths of corruption. Let the games go on.
