"have been reading your posts. You and I are worlds apart, socially."
After due consideration, I can not for the life of me figure out why anyone would write something like that. The person who wrote this lives about 40 miles from me, and has for decades. Same country, same state, same county, same ambiant culture all our lives. Yet, worlds apart, socially?
Why, because you're a republican and I'm a democrat? Because you're rich and I'm poor? Because you're conservative and I'm liberal? Worlds apart? Huh? How can any two people living on the same planet, much less the same town, be "worlds apart" in anything?
The other day a very earthlike planet was discovered orbiting a nearby star. Did anybody notice?
This planet could very well harbor life, even intelligent life. You wanna see worlds apart socially? When the human race finally does encounter life forms from other planets, all our cultural differences, which might seem so profound now, will drastically shrink.
A computer person and a stone age person are inherently quite similar. All people are, fundamentally. In our divisive culture, (America) we tend to forget our similarities. Chinese, German, American? All the same, basically.
Its all about attitude. We can either emphasize differences, and divide ourselves against other people, or emphasize all we have in common, and reconcile.

Puppet vs Puppeteer
The economy seems to be improving, in the United States, if not in Europe. Stock market climbing, unemployment down, GDP probably up. This would seem to favor Barrack Hussein Obama in his reelection bid. On election day, a poor economy might not favor an incumbant president, but it might favor a business like challenger. But a good economy will favor the incumbant, particularly against a challenger who has carefully cultivated a reputation as an insensitive rich guy.
If the economy continues to improve, and Mitt and Newt keep duking it out, things will look really good for the incumbant Obama.
The noted author and social commentator Chris Hedges is quick to point out that Obama is no less a corporate puppet than any republican; true enough, but perhaps a bit needlessly negative.
Obama will raise at least one billion dollars over the next few months, probably enough to purchase the presidency, again. That's the way its done in America, and we don't seem to mind.
Conservatives ridicule Obama for having been a "community organizer", trying to portray a noble endeavor as senseless rabble rousing among the poor. Obama, like Bill Clinton, never had nor made any money until he became president. He knows what a modest life style is, and what necessary frugality is. These things Mitt has never known.
We the nintey nine per cent want a president who understands what its like to be poor. A fellow corporate puppet, if you will, rather than a corporate puppeteer.

Life Expectancy
The world we live in aint all that bad, all things considered.We still have enough natural beauty left to provide ample opportuntiy for rejoicing in the experience of nature, almost everyone agrees that war must be abolished, and we're at least starting to acknowledge our responsibility for properly managing the ecosystem.
Not only that, but people are living longer.In the United States alone are more than one hundred thousand people over the age of one hundred, and it is believed that the first person to reach one hundred fifty is already alive. And apparently, spectacularly, most of today's diseases will soon be cured.
For all this we should be grateful, and pleased with human achievement. How much longer will we live, or do we want to live? It all depends on the quality of life, of course.
Still, you would think, that there would come a point, at which anyone would be ready to die, mentally. A point at which the juices and energies of life start to taper and wane, bringing a sense of quiet resignation and acceptance.
A life span of a hundred years has a certain appeal. But beyond that...seems uncertain. It might be that we humans will be better off if we focus on quality of life, for everyone, and let longevity take care of itself.
WE can devote our lives to knowing that those who descend from us will have a cleaner, less crowded, more prosperous and happy civilization on a planet covered in beauty; if we the currently living make it that way.

Let's use the military properly
These are hard times in Ft. Smith , Arkansas, with a couple of big factories, including Whirlpool appliance, moving to Mexico. Typical corporate berhavior of the past few decades, isn't it?
Now we hear that the 188th military base in Ft. Smith is set for closing, as part of the program to reduce military costs, and create a leaner, meaner, smarter, more efficient military in the post Bin Laden world.
I believe that this 188th is a national gaurd unit, although I'm not sure. For purposes here, it doesn't matter.
The point is, why start closing military bases on American soil, when we have over 800 on foreign soil, most or all of which could and should be closed?
Now the U.S. is evidently considering building floating military bases for the high seas. Don't we already have that right now, with our thirteen or fourteen aircraft carriers?
When will we, the American popular masses, assert our power, rise up, and let the military industrial complex know, once and for all, that we the people are not interested in continuing to be the world's only super power, riding high above all others, policing the world, bankrupting ourselves?
Our corporate masters move manufacturing jobs out of the country, impoverishing us, while buying and paying politicians to maintain a huge global military empire to guarantee safety for American corporate enterprise - overseas.
We would rather defend the United States than govern the world by ourselves. Overwhelmingly, the American people feel that way; that we ought to return to being a republic, and give up the empire.
More military bases on American soil, instead of less, would be less expensive, and more helpful to the economy. We could use most of the resources we bring home from abroad to protect and defend our own borders! What a novel idea!
Could the military possibly be retooled to participate in infrastructure reconstruction?
The American military could be an engine of economic prosperity, and American security, right here at home.

Planetary Possibilities
The most exciting event in the world is the ongoing discovery of planets orbiting far away stars, just as earth orbits sun.
However, on the front page of American magazines, newspapers, and websites you will more likely find drama with Brad and Angelina, or Miley Cyrus in a swimsuit.
The new planets simply aren't sexy enough to compete for attention at the top rank of American celebrity culture. But they're exciting all the same, because they offer evidence of abundant life throughout the universe, merely by being what they are, potential habitat for humanity, or alien life.
Although our level of knowledge is still primitive, it almost appears that the dreamers and crackpots may be right, and extreterrestrials may be running around everywhere. This new planet evidence is brand new,and quite convincing. The "galactic federation" seems more real than ever. It might be time to stop ridiculing and ignoring the UFO people, it might be time to join them in their beliefs. Or, if not yet, then perhaps soon.
Maybe the Andromedans and the greys and all the rest really are here among us, and have been a long time, doing everything, crop circles, abductions, mutilations, monument building, of which they are suspected. Who knows? But at least we know something equally profound: we know that the universe is filled with planets like earth. Until now, we didn't know that. Its a start.

Mitt's Values
So Mitt said that he doesn't really care about the very wealthy and the very poor, because the very wealthy have all that money, and the very poor have a sefety net, which, if it ever needs fixing, can do Mitt can do. That's comforting.
There's been a lot of political talk lately about taxing the wealthy, class warfare, economic inequality, and so forth. Not one to be indecisive, Mitt delivered the decisive solution: to hell with both the wealthy and the poor! Let's focus on the middle class.
Of course Newt, not one to miss an opportunity, jumped on it like a fly on dung. And why not? Who wouldn't? It might take Mitt awhile to get past this one.
In Mitt we have a man who thinks that a quarter million dollars isn't much money, that the poor are well taken care of, and that the greatest possible honor is receiving the endorsement of Donald Trump. Needless Depressions
The Truthless Reconciler has as its mission nothing less than the awakening of the human species, to its current dire circumstances, and to its unlimited dpower to correct the current situation, and create a beautiful future for our descendants.
A friend told me that having read this blog, she couldn't tell whether I am a cynic or an optimist. I asked her if I could maybe be a bit of both..
Here at The Truthless Reconciler we believe that all religions are beautiful, though the sacrificial cults might be a bit tough to swallow.. we believe that Islam, Christianity..and all the others....are beautiful, and true.
Likewise we understand that all points of view deserve respect, if not agreement.
Long term human survival on this planet appears to be in question. Long term survival for the "United States of America" seems likewise uncertain. My father warned me in 1971, when I was sixteen, that America was in trouble, and declining fast. I believed him then, and I believe it now;
..and yet, somehow..here we are..here I am...miraculously, somehow...complete...
Maybe we can muddle through after all! Maybe something good will happen! Wouldn't it be nice, if on this coming December twenty first, the world didn't end? YES!... that would be nice...
economic recessions and depressions seem, for instance, unnecessary, avoidable..avoidable through the use of direct, intelligent human action! How can they not be? Are we that helpless to help ourselves, to control our economic prosperity with intelligent planning and action? Surely not! And yet, that's exactly what we seem to be, utterly helpless: helpless to sustain long term societal economic health without extreme volatile periods of economic failure.
There is no logical reason for recessions or depressions except human nature and behavior, which can be guided and planned. Why not start?

Mom's Work Ethic
The purpose of this blog is to elicit as much written thought from as many people as possible.I got my 91 year old mother to contribute. Here's her contribution:
Back to Work?
Retirement requires planning.Coming out of retirement to reenter the work force also requires preparation. Knowledge, experience, and dedication has been a part of the retirees work history. Bringing these aspects to a new job is a big asset. Since society is prone to be youth oriented, the older and the young must have cooperation and understanding. Competition may be keen but skills that are learned will reap benefits.An attitude for success brings self confidence which is vital for a stable career, and going back to work enhanced that feeling.
Not bad, mom. I had asked her to write about her career and retirement, and the fact aht she wasn't sure whether to retire or keep working. Her personal debate ended when the administration showed no interest in retaining her, and she walked away. I wanted her to deal with this as an indication of a growing problem in America: retirement, and expectations for it.
But I think she said it better than I ever could have...

American Escapism
Stress starts early in the day, and there is no let up until bedtime.The world is filled with danger, real and imagined, which places us in in a state of perpetual worry and stress. The drive to work is a dangerous enterprise, especially with an American driver always within five feet of the rear bumper.
Money problems, job pressures, the possibility of ID theft or random violence...
December 21, 2012 is approaching, the volcanic ocean beneath Yellowstone is overdue for a huge eruption, the ocean level is rising, and will not reverse or stop, dooming all coastal civilization.
The weather is obviously quite different now, global warming seems evident,
economic collapse threatens, nuclear terrorism, viral epidemics seem..unavoidable.
So we all have a lot to worry about, so we tend to try to push it aside and focus on escaping, through constant entertainemnt. And since shrewd people understand that you can make a lot of money entertaining people who are determined to escape reality one way or another, behold american culture! The land of celebrity culture, where anyone who helps us forget about our lives is a great hero!
As long as this makes us all happy...so be it...But does it?
Wouldn't it be better if the world were a place from which we felt no desire to escape, but rather to embrace? If we wanted to immerse ourselves in it, rather than run from it?

The Truthless Reconciler continues to actively seek a variety of writers to express a variety of viewpoints, especially conservative. So far, no luck, but we'll keep trying.
Newt Gingrich can probably explain how corporate capitalism is compatible with christianity, because he's good at articulating conservative ideas, but in his absence we'll do what we can.
The main argument is that those who are wealthy have been rewarded by God. And how can anyone argue with that? However, it almost seems that Jesus discouraged collecting personal wealth:
"Go they way, and sell whatsoever thou hast, and give unto the poor,
and thou shalt have treasure, in heaven."
He also seems to favor paying taxes, no matter how high: "render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's."
Those among us who favor hiking taxes on the wealthy to pay for entitlement programs are not entirely without scriptural support. Even today, those who follow Christ most fervantly tend to be non materialistic, monastic, prayerful.
The best guess is that Jesus of Nazareth wouldn't have any complaint with any modern economic system which treats everyone respectfully and fairly, no matter how competitive the system. Are there any systems on earth which meet this standard? Beneficial economic competition must have rules, to eliminate chaos, violence, war.
Capitalist christianity? Never. Christian capitalism? Let's give it a try.

Revolt From Television
Just a few more comments with regard to television. Consider cancelling your cable for awhile, just to see how well you live without it. If enough of us do that from time to time, we can influence our corporate masters. (Gore Vidal turned me on to the term "corporate masters", while convincing me that they indeed are).
We can respond to them that we insist on better intellectual content, and a reasonable limit to advertising time. This business of having 22 minutes of commercials for a one hour program is a bit, shall we say, "over the edge"?
Throw a few good looking gals on the screen, stress 'em out, let 'em argue and fight, over sex and money, switch to commercial. Shock, seduce, sell. The magic television formula of our corporate masters. If only it didn't work quite so well...

Television Liberation
On December 20 of last year I called the cable TV company and asked them to disconnect my cable. The pleasant young man assured me he would. But it never happened, at least not yet. Presumably it will soon. I'll flip on one of my TVs, and....
..there will be....static.....and that will be fine..but it hasn't happened yet.
Every few years it seems I get fed up with television programming, so I call it quits. Then, eventually, for some reason, I come back (to TV).
The Kardashians, Sex In the City, Desperate Housewives...these are programs I've never seen, not once..but they are, essentially, the reason for my canceling this time.
When it gets to the point where the Weather Channel is the best thing on, because every other channel has beautiful blondes in emotional distress...
Too much button punching on the remote. Too much dissatisfaction. Way too much advertising. Better to be active on the internet, than inactive in front of a TV, eh?
Each day I watch less TV, as I continue my cycle. I'm sure someday I'll come back to it. When I do, I hope its better, in terms of intellectual stimulation, than it is now.
Television is a great invention, in the right hands. Currently television is owned and controlled by our corporate masters, rather than by we the people. And thus today:
Television is intended to seduce us into being the corporate puppets that we are.
Television works like a charm. Its the primary corporate tool of control.

When it gets to the point where the Weather Channel is the best thing on, because every other channel has beautiful blondes in emotional distress...
Too much button punching on the remote. Too much dissatisfaction. Way too much advertising. Better to be active on the internet, than inactive in front of a TV, eh?
Each day I watch less TV, as I continue my cycle. I'm sure someday I'll come back to it. When I do, I hope its better, in terms of intellectual stimulation, than it is now.
Television is a great invention, in the right hands. Currently television is owned and controlled by our corporate masters, rather than by we the people. And thus today:
Television is intended to seduce us into being the corporate puppets that we are.
Television works like a charm. Its the primary corporate tool of control.

Deism Redefined
I should like to correct a misunderstanding engendered by a statement made in the article
"Secular Christian Nation" , in this issue. In it deisim was defined as "essentially atheism", referring to the religious viewpoint of many of America's founders.
Deism is actually more than simply atheism. The earlier definition actually was inspired by Gore Vidal, who in fact did define deisim as essentially atheism.
But one must not get carried away by love of Gore Vidal, right?
Undoubtedly people like Jefferson, Franklin, Madison, and Adams had far deeper religiosity than merely a refutation of it; they undoubtedly sensed, at least intuitively, the inherent divinity of human beings, the fact that nature, in what we perceive of it, is divine. For these deist founders of America God the creator established the laws of nature, then allowed them to operate, uninterrupted.
That is not atheism, what it is, essentially, is a rejection of ritual, ceremony and dogma, and a direct embracing of God the spirit as the creator of nature, and the spirit which pervades all.

People vs. Corporations
Having established that heavy mud slinging is the best strategy for Mitt and Newt among their republican constituents, the question now is how will this affect republican chances in the general election against Obama.
By election time both Mitt and Newt will be farily well covered with republican mud, Newt, the erratic, volatile adulterer, Mitt, the high rollin' wheeler dealer who thinks $370,000 is chump change.
Obama, a frim fidelity family man, and humble grass community organizer among the poor, presents an interesting contrast to the exciting lives of Mitt and Newt.
All the republican candidates have something to offer. Mitt's stable family life is an asset. His flip flopping and wide spectrum of liberal-moderate-conservative political beliefs indicate open mindedness as much as political pandering.
Newt's vision of an American colony on the moon reflects a positive can do spirit, impractical as it may be. Ron Paul's statement that he would send only a few politicians to the moon received laughter and agreement.
Anyone who is elected president will do it with corporate money, and will therefore be a corporate spokesperson, including Obama. We live in a corporate country, and increasingly, a corporate world.
On the internet the non corporate 99% can stay in touch, organize, and advocate for the masses. Most of the massses support corporate globalism, whether they know it or not. And that's fine. Our corporate world is neither inherently evil, nor is it the enemy. An ounce of reform is worth a pound of revolution.

Mitt and Newt
Mitt wins Florida big and looks to have big lead in GOP presidential candidate race.
But Newt isn't finished, not by a long shot. Romney is not acceptable to far right conservatives; he's too moderate, and even liberal, sometimes.
A lady called Rush Limbaugh expressing disappointment at Newt for his marital history, because otherwise he has virtue; he's a good debater and can explain conservatism.
Rush pointed out that both candidates (Mitt n Newt) have resume items which must be overlooked by republican voters. And indeed they do.
Mitt's moderate Mormonism might not play too well with the conservative republican base, and Newt's marital history is not what the socially conservative republican base is looking for.
Mitt or Newt, the republicans will have a flawed candidate to send up against Obama, whose only flaw is his record, which he can defend, and which looks better as the economy improves.
Obama can claim to be the true champion of capitalism, the president who did something when something had to be done, the president who works for the little guy and does what it takes to solve problems, like health care and big time corporate financial bail outs.
Between now and the general election, he'll probably talk a lot about bringing the deficit and the national debt down, because that is the key issue now, the white elephant in the room.
For now, Obama is content to watch Mitt n Newt battle it out.
