Leading Them, Like Sheep

THE HOPEFUL, OPTIMISTIC PERSON said; "Let's pray that Jesus will lead the evangelicals away from the far right". I say" "good luck with that". OH, nothing wrong with a little prayin' now and then. Its good for the psyche, if nothing else. But convincing seventy five million people, people who seem to be happily self deluded with demonstrably false information, to stop acting and believing politically like fascist reprobates is gonna,it seems evident, take a whole lot more than thoughts, prayers, wishful thinking, and Jesus. Aside from the fact that the biblical Jesus may or may not have existed, if he did exist,he did,verifiably, promise to return to Earth within the lifetime of those to whom he preached, and, well, he is more than a little overdo. If he, for whatever reason, cannot or will not fulfill his own commitments, how are we to expect him, wherever he is and whomever he might be,to move the hearts and minds of millions of cult following minions of madly-in-love-with-Trump sycophantic political morons? Curing leprosy and walking on water and feeding a few hundred hungry folks with bread an fish pulled straight out of the ether is one thing; persuading Trump-lovers to break the spell and resume some semblance of intelletual and moral credibility is, as some might say, a horse of a totally different color. The mere fact that we are dealing largely with evangelical Christinas is the biggest barrier to lucidity and basic sanity. These are, after all, the folks who deny that Trump lost the presidential election, who deny that climate change not only is a real threat but that is exists at all, and who, in any event, have no concern for the future of humanity because, hallelujah, the Lord is a gonna come back soon, as soon as today...or maybe tomorrow. As Alfred E.Neuman of Mad Magazine fame famously said: "what, me worry?" The only recourse ia a sustained, if desperate appeal to reason and moral integrity. Such an atttempt has already been tried,and has failed miserably, as evidened by the horrifying fact that not only is Donald Trumo the current frontrunner for the Republican twenty twenty four presidential nomination, but that he also leads President Biden by a percentage point in the early polls. Failing appeals to reason, patriotism, sanity, and fundamental moral decency, the only recourse is the proverbial leading of the flock of sheep to the nourishment of political common sense approach. The one glimmer of hope is that this is the precise method to which evangelical far right Trump supporers are long accustomed. But before we get our fleeting hopes up, we must bear in mind that these are the very selfsame intellectually and morally sequestered blinder-wearing votaries who willingly, happily continue to support a man with no fewer than ninity one felony raps hanging over his orange haired head, and who, nonetheless, don't care. They would,they have shown, rather be governed by Trump governing from prison than by any other Republican, and that dear reader, should be sufficient to scare the living hell out of you. If it aint, nothng is.
