Doing Something About Trump

VOLUMES COULD AND WILL BE WRITTEN about the Trump phenomenon, from a sociological and psychological perspective, trying to explain it, its existence and persistance. The current situation in the United States, in which tens of millions of people are unconditionally devoted to a politican who has become a cult leader, even though or maybe because he tried to steal the presidency and tried to overthrow the government to do it, is not sustainable, is very harmful to the country, and one way or another, must be eliminated. In the previous article we agreed that it will have to be done...one....person....at a time, ultimately. It won't happen suddenly, by exuecutive order. Perhaps if every sane American, meaning anti-Trumper, adopted a brainwashed Trump cult member as a personal project, there would eventually be enough success stories to tip the scales, and put an end to the insane misery. Some people are amenable to reason, to a point. You can sit them down and browbeat them with such firm and irrefutable facts that they will grudgingly concede that Trump lost the election, and, well, that's a start. Even in accomplishing this seemingly perfectly simple and reasonable step, others, indeed most Trumpes, are far beyond hope. But the "stop the steal" lunacy is, after all, at the bottom of it, and is so obviously nonsense that its a good place to begin, on a personal level. We notice that generally the same people who insist that the election was stolen from Trump also believe that climate change is a hoax, that evolution is a hoax, and that Jesus Christ is going to return any day now. In other words, there is a certain type of person, a certain segment of the population, vulnerable to delusional thinking. For the sake of simplicity and accuracy, we can call them "conservatives". The fact that there appears to be about seventy five millions of them, maybe thirty percent of the population, is indeed daunting, but should, indeed must leave us, the sane majority, undeterred, by sheer necessity. The urgent imperative of saving the nation from the inevitable disastrous consequences of acquiescing to the lunacy, and allowing it to govern us, is a thought too horrible to even contemplate, much less accept. Trump and his supporters wanted to win his reelction so badly, and his failure to do so was so horrible for them, that they chose to invent the election theft scenario and embrace it, retreating into an imaginary world, rather than face the facts. They did and continue to do the same thing with climate change, evolution, and other matters. They then justify their comfortable ilusions (delusions) by declaring that those who oppose them are evil, dishonest people who nefariously claim that Biden won, that evolution and climate change are real, and are therefore a great threat to America and are destoying the country, and must be defeated and destroyed. Its all about these poor unhappy people living in a world whose reality they simply cannot abide, cannot accept, and must escape any way they can, inventing a fantasy world to replace it with. One can see how deeply enbedded, how serious and difficult to dismantle this whole thing is and will continue to be. We the remaining sane have our work cut out for us.
