IN January 2013, according to law, the american military budget is going to be cut considerably, which seems to make sense, since the united states already has enough military might to destroy every nation on earth repeatedly, and is bankrupt.
never let common sense get in the way of politics; the republicans are determined to restore the moncy to the military, and to instead cut food stamps and various other social welfare programs to "pay for it."
...is there any reason for anyone to be surprised by this? never met a republican who didn't adore military over spending.
the hard cold fact is that if the united states does not drastically reduce military expenditures, the economy will eventually collapse, as it seems to have been trying to do for the past several years. a bankrupt empire cannot keep its empire indefinately. great britain relinquished hers gracefully, with relative dignity; america must do the same, and soon.
ther best solution to welfare programs is to limit them to their current levels, while moving people off them through job creation. social spending is indeed a problem, the republicans are right about that. we cannot continue the current trend of increasing entitlements without increasing productivity. that will ruin the currency, and dollars will fill wheel barrows as mothers walk to the store to spend millions on groceries, like post world war one germany.
it is beyond dispute that within the realm of human nature people who are paid to not work are tempted to not work. we all know recipients of disability of whose disabilities we are suspicious.
but if military spending is not severely reduced, and soon, america will become a disabled nation, and we'll all need welfare.

The Inevitable (homosexuals are human too)
PRESIDENT OBAMA comes out in favor of gay marriage, after years of thought and personal evolution. Fair enough, but the prez might have saved a lot of evolutionary energy had he simply accepted the inevitable right from the git go; that gay marriage is going to be legal and perfectly socially acceptable within a very short period of time, say, ten years. Then too, what does it really matter what obama thinks?
over the past ten years the percentage of americans in favor of gay marriage has been increasng by about one per cent per year, a substantial amount. this is because the older generation of which a large majority supported traditional values opposing gay marriage is dying off, and the new generation, those under 30 currently, support gay marriage by two to one.
within a decade all fifty states will probaby be ordaining gay marriages. now, of course 32 states have banned it, and of the fifteen or so which have legalized it, all have done so by legaslative action rather than popular vote.
this fact is used by some conservatives such as rush limbaugh to claim that the american people overall oppose gay mariage, when in fact quite the opposet is true. right now the country is divided about fifty fifty on the issue, but that will soon change to a clear majority taking the liberal view.
this is the way of history; liberal ideals always come to fruition, because change is inevitable, and liberalism is change. todays conservatism is yesterday's liberalism. why on earth would anybody hold out against gay marriage, against the inevitable?
the same reason conservatives held out against civil rights for blacks and women, perhaps. simple resistance to change. there'll come a time when marriage as we know it will be but one option of many marital choices, including gay marriage, three person marriage, multi person marriage, open marriage, and who knows what else.
the reason is that traditional marriage is obsolete because it does not provide the flexibility people want. traditional marriage is like christianity; fewer and fewer people, as time goes by, see the need to restrict poeple's options to only one.

Beyond the Bounds of Reason: sipping coffee
IT IS widely known that in america young black men are rounded up and put in prisons, usually for drug and weapons related convictions. Upper middle class white guys get probation, black kids get jail time.
What, something like one third of all black men between the ages of eighteen and thirty are in prison right now? whatever the number, its shocking.
only when a small group of white men with shaved heads and full body tatoos are caught collecting automatic weapons and planing to kill minorities, which happens with some degree of regularity here, are we reminded that racism still tries to regrow its severed snake tail.
marijuana and cheap cocaine substitutes are the particular substances the possession and sale of which we have arbitrarily chosen to call "crime"; expedient if the goal happens to be incarcerating poor male minorities.
meanwhile, millions of us arise each morning, and become human about the time we finish our first cup of coffee. I drank coffee for the first time at the ripe old age of thirty seven, and never looked back. Soon after taking up the habit I was "hooked', and I understood why its so popular.
any powerful mind altering drug that makes you feel good is bound to be popular, and caffeine fills the bill. You'd be hard pressed to find a more powerful, mind altering, and pleasant, drug than caffeine. Coffee should be illegal, by our own twisted standards, and would be, were it discovered suddenly today.
Somehow, miraculously, we get by with legalized coffee, no one goes to jail on account of it, and everybody, drinkers and non, is happy. Kids almost always hate the smell of it, but that's no problem; kids have little political power, and can be easily bribed.
Abraham Lincoln said: "prohibition goes beyond the bounds of reason, in that it attempts to control a man's appetites by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. Prohibition strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our nation was founded."
By "prohibition", Lincoln meant the prevention of hedonistic (fun) sin, such as alcohol, other recreational drugs like tobacco, gambling, sex, and, um...am I leaving anything out?
Lincoln, as usual, was right. The insanity of cherry picking a few drugs for criminalization while embracing others as integral features of culture is sheer lunacy, and the price we pay is a police state which puts a greater part of its citizens in prison than any other nation.
Civilized countries shouldn't behave like this, but of course common sense never stopped us before.

Racoons, Rats, and Aliens; Tommy's Tale
WHEN i was about ten, my father, who was, incredibly, as weird as i am, got himself a pet racoon, and named him "Tommy". Evidently the little critter was just wondering around the property, and dad fed and befriended him, and the rest is history.
My father and tommy went everywhere together; tommy rode on the dashboard, and on dad's shoulder. tommy attracted a lot of human attention by so doing.
I remember tommy; he was beautiful, like all racoons, and sweet, and friendly. I think I remember patting him. But it didn't last long. Soon enough tommy went about his business, which, evidently, consisted of living a wild and independent life in a joplin, missouri residential neighborhood.
perhaps tommy dug around in human trash; that's what racoons do, all over the world, as they cohabitate human cities, large and small, in large numbers, as well as wilderness. recently i stepped out on my front porch in the middle of the night, and there sottd/sat a big armadillo. it looked straight at me, but didn't budge. I did, straight back into the house. they aint even supposed to be this far north...
they (racoons) seem to prefer human cities to wilderness, and why not? better source of food. easier life. humans could probably start befriending racoons in a big way, all over the world, and have another dog-like companion species, if we wanted to. so far, we haven't wanted to. stay tuned. cultural values change.
animals are everywhere, all kinds of animals, living among us humans, in cities large and small, and in all rural areas in even greater abundance. the animal kingdon has not surrendered anything to home sapiens. they merely dwell among us; unknown to us. racoons, rats, squirrels, dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys, snakes, armidillos, moles, mice, birds, cockroaches; the list is endless, this is a shared planet.
no matter what city you live in, or what town, the animals are neraby, but out of sight, by their choice. we only see the occasional road kill, the robin here, the squirrel there. at this very moment you are within ten feet of a rat. believe me. of the teeming abandunce of life next to you, yo see hardly any of it.
same thing with UFOs and extraterrestrial aliens. they are every where, all over the universe, including earth. they're here. all right, only we don't see them, often. why not? same reason you don't see racoons rates and mice; becuse they don't want you to. they hide from us, deliberately.
we tend to see them when they want us to, like, when they flew over christopher columbus's ship, and he wrote about them in his seldom read journal. or like when they drag race with trans continental jet aircraft and are seen by sober minded japanese pilots, or when they buzz around at night, seen by sober minded police officers, world wide.
we now know that in our immediate neighborhood in the milky way galaxy there are hundreds of nice, habitable planets. some of them, if not most or all of them, harbor life, and some of that life is undoubtedly quite advanced compared to our primitive selves.
they put on quite a show for the U.S.S. aircraft carrier Roosevelt, so we are told, by those who served aboard her. OH , the aliens are out there, and over here, and in a lot of differenct places, just like the rest of us, just like the racoons. welcome to our teeming universe!

The Expression of Good Intentions
AMERICAN history, like that of other countries, is divided into sundry eras; the Jacksonian era, the progressive era, the viet nam era, and so forth.
The period during which we currently live will ultimately receive many descriptions. Ladies and gentlemen, whatever other era we are living in, we are living in the era of "the expression of good intentions". Good intentions underpinned by not a trace of honest intent.
YOU do it, I do it, we all do it. Are other countries experiencing a similar crisies of integrity?
Is corporate consumer capitalism responsible? in america the advertisning industry is so huge and influential that a prominant historian used the phrase "The United States of Advertising".
advertising drives the american economy, elects its politicians, controls the lifestyles of americans. advertising is effective brain washing propaganda, and americ is awash in it, as we all know, primarliy through billions of big corporation dollars.
advertising always works, and it always expresses good intentions.
every politician seekig fame and power expresses nothing but the best intentions.
and we, the helpless american masses, go around telling each other "I'll call you soon", or "I'll drop by". we all know we never mean it when we say it, but the expression of good intentions is sufficient in america; n substantive action is required to support the expression..
we all have at least one friend or relative who promises all kinds of help to anyone and everyone, whether it is needed or requested. I'll paint your house, I'll clean your garage, I'll do this for you, I'll do that for you.
Trouble is, the help somehow never arrives. It sounds good to make such promises. it makes the promiser look good. it feels good to express good intentions. the expression of good intentions impresses people immediately; it might even be a nice shortcut to friendship.
eventually, the phoniness is revealed to those who receive the promises, to the disappointment of the expressor of them. thus, advertising always changes. someday american corporations may find themselves confronting a savvy public; not yet, but maybe someday.
if the road to hell is paved with good intentions, then the on ramp to that road is paved with the expression of them.

CONSERVATIVES AND REBUPLICANS, who are usually the same thing, believe overwhelmingly that the current high price of gas is president obama's fault, and that he could do something about it, but won't, because he wants high gas prices in order to get americans mad at capitalism, or some such drivel.
They don't give many specific ideas about what the president could do, other than to sign legislation premitting more domestic drilling, which experts claim would have only a minor impact on the world oil market.
democrats, and liberals, (often the same thing) almost universally claim that obama has no power to favorably impact the price of oil, and thus, gas.
interestingly enough, during the bush administration everyone said exactly the opposite; democrats accused bush of unwillingness to lower prices, claiming that he had the power to do so, and republicans pleaded inherent presidential incapability; the president has no power to lower gas prices, so they then said.
during the 2004 presidential campaign republicans characterized john kerry as an elitist out of touch aristocrat; now its mitt romney's turn to be so characterized by the democrats. but the dems didn't mind kerry's wealth, and the republicans don't seem to mind mitt'
does all this possibly indicate that americans are perhaps a tad subjective and biased in matters of political issues? or maybe in matters of everything?
the long vaunted american trait of american fairness seems to be somewhat in question.
obama brags about the bailout and subsequent success of general motors. romney opposed everything obama did, seemingly automatically, while telling us that the "good" part of the general motors bailout was a romney idea, and by golly he'll be glad to take credit for it..whatever...with leaders like this, what do we expect, sanity? perhaps not.
"that don't make good sense. hell, that don't even make good nonsense," quoth davy crockett.
WE all know when we as well as our political leaders are speaking nonsense, deep down we know it, but we refuse to see our own lack of reason , consistency, and fairness. Is there any way we could just cut out the nonsense, the dishonest posturing, and get to work solving our problems?
"he loves not who does not see the faults of the beloved as virtues," said goethe, and goethe had a point, as always.
we all might do well do tone down our "my country right or wrong, my political viewpoint always right, that of my opponents always wrong" mentality. if we give ourselves blame or credit, let us give others the same treatment, under all circumstances.
if we don't stop the illogical nonsense, our angry national temporary insanity, we might end up living in a country where nothing positive is ever accomplished, because we have all forgotten how to accomplish anything.

Msytery Lady With Wisdom
The other day i was skimming profiles on some internet dating site, and one lady's comment caught my attention. she said "we're gonna have to share, because some people can produce more than others."
This profound truth, stated with such utter direct simplicity, overwhelmed me. nowhere in the bible, nor in karl marx, nor goethe, nor anywhere else has anyone ever uttered a truer sentence.
so elegant, so intelligent, so replete with meaning from the beginning: "we're gonna have to share"..implying that thus far, we have NOT shared, but that, in the future, we must, because its becoming critical that we do...
and this lady did nbot impress me as being particularly well educated, i recall. but she sure had her values straight.
the idea has been expressed many times before, most notably by jesus christ "go thy way, and sell whatsoever thou hast, and give unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure, in heaven".
but don't even bother to look for any better expression than offered by "we're gonna have to share, because some people can produce more than others"..., it doesn't exist.
I remember nothing about the lady, unfortunately; i was merely skimming profiles. i have no idea about how old she was, where she lived, what she looked like, or anything else about her, which is a shame, because she must be a really high class human being. she gave me, and the world, the most eloquent rendition of socialism ever, as eloquent as christ himself.
conservatives like rush limbaugh often use the word "producers" to mean the wealthy, and proclaim that they should not be punished by paying higher tax rates than the poor in a progressive taxation system. as if helping others were "punishment"

This profound truth, stated with such utter direct simplicity, overwhelmed me. nowhere in the bible, nor in karl marx, nor goethe, nor anywhere else has anyone ever uttered a truer sentence.

I remember nothing about the lady, unfortunately; i was merely skimming profiles. i have no idea about how old she was, where she lived, what she looked like, or anything else about her, which is a shame, because she must be a really high class human being. she gave me, and the world, the most eloquent rendition of socialism ever, as eloquent as christ himself.

BY The Year 2030 forty two per cent of all american adults will be obese, so they say. (we never quite know who "they" are, do we?). Right now, the number stands at thirty three per cent, so presumably "they" are extrapolating using current trends.
forty two million more americans will be obese by 2030; forty two million new obese people, with a lot of obese people now living, dead. this has been a long time coming, probably since the post world war two development of television, the increase in labor saving machinery, and the advent of fast foods and the sugar craze we now witness.
Plus, food is just too darned cheap here....what rotten luck.
if americna en mass went on a diet, lost all that weight, and got in decent shape, billions of dollars would be saved in health care costs, and people would be more productive; these two factors combined would probably be sufficient to solve every economic problem in the country;
it would pay off the national debt, balance the budget, and return the value of american currency to a reasonable level. As things are going now, american life expectancy will start to decline, and health care costs will soas to become the overwhelmingly dominant portion of resource allocation.
the solution is diet and exerise, from sea to shining sea. Even if only a small portion of the population would get fit, it would make some difference; a high percentage of the population fit and lean would turn the country around.

World Wide Revolution
LIKE a bad penny, Vladimir Putin is - "he's baaack!" - in Russia, to the apparent dismay of a large minority of russians, many of whom have been out on the streets in big cities, protesting. There have been accusations that the election was dishonest and rigged, which would not be surprising... because here in america they almost certainly are.
anything you russians can do, we americans can do better. remember, we made it to the moon first, and we had the first president elected by supreme court politics and hanging "chads"; small pieces of paper attached to paper ballots. (see election 2000, Bush vs Gore).
in america, dead people are allowed to vote, especially in big cities, and sometimes people who win elections actually receive more votes than the number cast. details, details...

Seeking Weakness
AMERICAN vice president Joe Biden warns us that if mitt romney is elected president, the new american president would very likely pursue a "weak" foreign policy. what does Biden mean by "weak"? he didn't really say.
maybe a "weak" foreign policy is one in which foreign countries are not given threats and ultimatums, or are not attacked. maybe it means that dictators are ignoraed rather than removed from office by the CIA.
maybe a weak american foreign policy would mean that america threatens no one, makes no attempt to control the world and the flow of oil in other countries, and does not send its military all over the world making wars and occupying other countries.
The more you think about it, the more you start to like the idea of a "weak" american foreign policy. such a policy would certainly stand in sharp contrast to the war mongering, belligerent, aggressive corporate driven foreign policy the U.S. has pursued since world war two as the great american empire grew to global proportions before collapsing in economic and diplomatic chaos. (coming soon).
the only problem is, a weak foreign policy does not sound at all like what mitt romney would pursue. from his own comments, and judging from the bahavior of recent conservative american presidents, a weak foreign policy is the last thing we will see from romney. isn't mitt the one who wants to nuke Iran and North Korea? or is that some other conservative republican...
a srtong foreign policy is the easiest, and least courageous, for any president; presidents don't have to fight.
we should be so lucky as to have obama's insulting scare tactic come true, and romney become the weakest president in american history, in foreign policy.

Warming On Walden Pond
ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY years ago yesterday Henry David Thoreau died at the tender age of 44, a victim of primitive nineteenth century medicine, or lack thereof.
Thoreau took careful notes during the two years he live at Walden pond and wrote his iconic book on the subject. His notes, written in horrible handwriting and using names for plants inconsistently, nonetheless provides a valuable insight into not only the wonders of nature, but also the phenomenon of global warming.
Thoreau's work indicates that in the 1850s spring sprang about two weeks later in the boston area than it does now, and autumn came earlier. the growing season has lengthened by about a month between then and now, in more places than walden pond. at this rate, we'll soon be living in a steamy thick tropical rain forest from arizona to new england.
the "little ice age" persisted from about 1300 A.D. to roughly 1850, then began to abate. this 500 year event resulted in a slowing of economic activity in europe, and its end triggered a revival of economic activity, based on agriculture, which continues to this day.
at valley forge, washington and his men suffered inordinately because of the little ice age, as did the french under napoleon in 1812. IN 1817 there was no summer across new england, and it snowed in august. throughout the little ice age very cool summers were the norm across north america and europe.
..however, much of the lengthening of the growing season has occured within the past forty years; since 1970. IN the american midwest, spring used to begin in april, now it blooms forth in march, and in certain areas even late february.
theys a whole lotta scientists who are quite frustrated these days, because they keep rolling out precise, understandable, verifiable mathematical proofs that global warming is not only occuring, but is rapidly accelerating, and is indeed cause ast least to some degree, to some very important degree, by human industrial activity.
over the next one hundred years, the sea level will rise aminimum of one foot, and a maximum of six feet, for dead certain. either way, its gonna be a hug problem. its time to start moving inland, but are we? well of course not. head in sand.
and yet many of us refuse to see it. our scientists can only lead us to water. let us hope that soon we choose to at least sip...

Hazing
FOR those among you who live in civilized countries, there is in america a charmingly quaint little tradition called "hazing", in which a person trying to become a member of an organization is subjected to humiliation, physical abuse; in essence, torture.
yes, leave it to good ole democratic equal opportunity america to precede social acceptance with torture...violence for the sake of ritual and tradition.
If he endures this in good grace, he will possibly or even probably be admitted to the organization, if not, he definitely won't. Hazing takes place among both genders, but is most prevalent among young men, unsurprisingly.
The organizations most prone to do this are college fraternities and sororities, collge interest clubs and athletic teams, and military units. It would not be surprising, however, to discover that the practice had spread to churches, civic groups, political organizations, and professional associations.
studies have recently indicated that hazing in general over the past few dacades has become more degrading, shocking, sexually oriented, and violent. How utterly surprising. How utterly surprising that anything in america is becoming more sexual, more violent... more....
..as goes the culture, so go the young...
in fact, since 1970 over one hundred people have died fromh hazing, most recently, of course, being the young african american drum major at Florida A. and M. university, for which 12 people face 2nd degree murder charges.
Traditionally, hazing doesn't result in criminal charges; people admitted to organizations are satisfied with the outcome; people not admitted usually don't press charges either, strangely; there really isn't much legal precedent, common law lor legislative law regarding the practice.
hazing has remained for the most part an "Inside" affair; what happens here stays here. that might now change, considering the publicity surrounding the A. and M. case.
so for those of you who might be considering relocating to america, be careful who you hang out with when you get here...

Socialism Shows Up
FRANCE has a new socialist leader, only the second socialist to attain the french presidency since world war two. reports in the american conservative media of the death of liberalism, as always, prove premature.
europe has been socialistic for a long time, particularly since world war two. taxes are high, government services are comprehensive, and corporate capitalism is heavily regulated.
and europe is more prosperous, less violent, and better educated than the united states.
in fact, europe, like japan, is sufficiently prosperous that the united states ought to withdraw All military bases and forces from those places and require them to defend themselves. but america is addicted to her vast empire, and europe and the japanese are addicted to the money they save by not maintaining large military infrastructure, at least, not nearly as large as would be necessary were they entirely on their own.
the united states has its fair share of socialism, and it isn't going anywhere, despite conservatives gnashing of teeth and claims to the contrary. america might very well be forced to freeze social welafare spending, making things tight for millions of welfare, social security, and social security disability reciepients; the fundamental concepts of socialism seem here to stay.
america has had socialism before, before FDR, though in our current conservative era, initiated by ronald reagan, people often forget that. during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries socialist movements were quite common in the U.S.; world war two, and the creation of the national security stated dominated by the military - industrial complex, put an end to all that.
but now the natives are restless again, as corporate profits soar, the per capita standard of living declines, the poor proliferate, and become ever poorer and more desperate. occupy wall street, seemingly on ice for now, might be only the tip of the proverbial iceberg in the long term. we are restless, and greatly dissatisfied. upheavals may be imminent, so hold on tight.

The Recreation of Controversy
YOU could take everything in the universe, put it in a blender, blend it, and pour it out, and if you did this, say, several trillion times, out would pop, at least once, the good ole U.S.A. that we all know and love, and the accompanying universe.
Given that, it then becomes a dead cinch certainty that some six year old kid will walk into the school cafeteria, stand deliberately next to some certain girl, and sing to her "I'm so sexy", or whatever exact song 'twas that the little boy sang.
And yes, his suspension from school is equally inevitable, and the reaction to it from all sides. My, how we do react to everything! WE may not do much to actively change our lives to foster within us more positive reactions to more positive occurances, but we sure do react.
its almsot as if we go to great trouble to create a decadant and unhealthy culture in order to have as much as possible about which to be outraged.
for those millions of us who are outraged at the kid's behavior, heaven forbid that we should slightly decrease, at least in our own neck of the woods, the influence of corporate sexual seduction in our society by simply turning off the TV.
better to just wait for the first kid to come bouncing in singing something we simultaneously support and censor, then have our cute little moment of self serving adrenalizing shock and outrage.
Hey! I have a great idea! why don't we see if we can create a culture in which huge wealthy coroprations seduce us with sex and violence for their profit while we lap it up like baby sheep?

Hey! I have a great idea! why don't we see if we can create a culture in which huge wealthy coroprations seduce us with sex and violence for their profit while we lap it up like baby sheep?
then, why don't we establish a widespread religion which disdains greed and sex for fun, then run around having fun embracing both the corporate manipulation and the religious values, ignoring the schizophrenic discordance, and enjoying the show when six year old kids sing about sex while we sit placidly by, seduced, languid, and dull, enjoying both the media coverage and own our moral outrage at both the crime and the punishment?

Money Making Negativity
I try to listen to rush limbaugh fairly often, because I consider it important to listen to people with whom you disagree. Also, I don't always disagree with rush. usually, but not always.after all, conservatism is not entirely wrong, notwithstanding what some liberals seem to think.
because i listen to rush openmindedly i am generally seen as somewhat of a traitor by my liberal compratriots, and because i am not conservative, i fare no better among conservatives; i am alone in the political jungle that is america.
I just got so damned tired of hearing liberals mouth the same old insults: Bush is a moron, conservatives are eviil, and so forth. Not that there aint a hint of truth to some of it, but still...enough is enough, and too much is too much. even the least intelligent conservative leader, say, ronald reagan,was of average intelligence, and basically, that's good enough to deserve respect.
rush does essentially the same thing to libs; he castigates them. he chews 'em up and spits 'em out for breakfast. and sometimes i wonder why. oh, we know why; negaativity, verbal violence sells better than positive harmonious talk. still, one senses that rush could do better, that he really doesn't believe what he says, that he has merely slipped into a comfortable and profitable mode, and prefers not to leave it.
i would rather hear rush expouse the virtues of conservatism, and quit the dubious attacks on liberalism. surely he doesn't really believe that liberals want a welfare state to ensure a permanent voting group of poor people to vote for democrats. nobody could believe such a thing. its too crazy.
surely he doesn't believe that the feminist movement is a way, the only way, for unattractive women to gain access to mainstream america, or whatever. whatever, its crazy sounding.
the most striking feature of modern conservatism is the way in which it tries to merge capitalism and christianity, when christianity, at least the teachings of jesus, seems more inclined towards socialism. if anyone wants to demonstrate that jesus christ was a free market corporate capitalist fully in favor of the profit motive, feel free. knock yourself out. maybe rush would be up to the job. i've nerver heard him try.
