IT WOULD BE A HORRIBLE THING, being a man, and knowing that you really are a woman, really should be a woman, were meant to be a woman, and that by some mistake you are a man. Even worse if this feeling has plagued you since childhood. Most of us are so accustomed to just taking ourselves as we are, accepting our gender without thought or complaint, that gender identity confusion seems like it would be truly miserable.
We can assume that, like all other forms of human suffering, gender identity crisis has been around awhile. And yet, like cancer, it seems to be, to a large extent, a modern phenomenon.
In the united states, every day, people are surgically altered to transform themsleves into what they know they should have been all along. Now there are thousands of transgender people among us, and we are all happier because of it. ( sex change recipients are happier, nicer, easier to get along with).
So it was perhaps inevitable that this issue would eventually reach the american prison system, where people craving for sex change would seemingly be incessantly reminded of their need, and where a large percentage of the american population resides.
We will soon be paying for sex change operations to inmantes who say they want one. We will also argue over whether gender confused men should be housed with women, and vice versa, indeed whether it is inhumane not to. Who knows where that will lead.
Ans so it seems that we as a society have decided, or, are in the process of deciding, that gender confusion is an illness, a disease, and all who suffer from it deserve treatment. One can scarcely imagine what an uproar christian conservatives will be making about this, soon enough.
Humans are often quick to forget their tolerance, and sex change surgery has, and is, variously and widely regarded as insane, optional, unnecessary, frivolous, unnatural, sinful, bizarre. You name it, sex change recipients have heard it. They may be the most abused group in a country with many candidates for the honor.
Most sex change recipients conceal their history, and most of the time, if not all the time, nobody notices, or can tell the difference. People who are married to transgenders often do not know the difference, so cleverly is the procedure performed.
So now, the american people are going to be forced into accepting transgenderism, along with homosexuality. But we can do it. It'll be hard, but we can do it. Oh, there'll be some dragging and kicking, but, after all the dust has settled, we'll all be walking around knowing no one's original gender, nor caring.

Control
THE WAR ON DRUGS, brain child of those twin towers of american intelligence and virtue, richard nixon and nancy reagan, was from the beginning a sham, a farce, and finally, at long last, the american people get the point.
Nobody with a brain ever believed that the war on drugs would eliminate, or even reduce the drug culture in america. Drug dealers and users are engaging in free enterprise,and practicing medicine, or trying to. They need treatment and help, not prosecution. IN portugal, this hard line, phony approach has been replaced by a radical new approach - tolerance and assistance, with great results.
The great war against evil never had enough popular interest and support, necessary for success in america, where without an elaborate promotional campaign nothing is possible, and where the people tend towards moral and recreational libertarianism. Economic and cultural realities in america favor drugs - dealer, and user. Capitalism, and hedonism.
IN the land of free enterprise, freedom of choice, a small junta of religious and corporate elitists have chosen to arbitrarily turn drug dealers and users into criminals. To publicly oppsose drug use is to make one seem virtous and righteous.
It is self evident that recreational drugs, like sugar, cholestoral, and running on concrete can be harmful to one's health. We all want to make the world a better place, so we take the easy way out; we pass laws making it illegal for the world not to be a better place.
America is a nation of control freaks; either control the people in your life, or get new people. Those at the top wish to remind those below who is in charge, and who is the most virtuous.
At least now we have the good sense to ingore the war on drugs; we have more serious matters to think about.

Gas Wars
THE PRICE OF GAS is very high right now in the U.S., as high or higher than its ever been, and this is great for the fuel (oil = fuel) companies, but terrible for the rest of us. Obviously, its been a problem, the price of gas, for a long time now, maybe since the first OPEC oil embargo in 1973.
Have you noticed that neither obama nor romney is saying very much about it? Its easy to understand why obama isn't. Quite simply, it makes him look bad. Right or wrong, incumbant presidents are reelected or turned out of office largely because of the economy, (stupid).
The current high price of gas tends to make obama look bad, so he ignores it, and tries to convince us that though the economy is worse than we want, and is recovering more slowly than a snail moves, its better than it was when he took office, and therefore, he should be reelected.
Romney's motives are not quite as plain. But please remember this: mitt romney is a corporate man, a man who buys, sells, and repairs corporations, and who believes that corporate america is the fundamental engine of the american economy. Mitt Romney believes in corporate profits, believes that they are a good thing, for everybody. (or so he says)
And the higher the price of gas, the higher corporate profits are, for the fuel companies, which people tend to mistakenly call "oil" companies. And, well, who knows who much money the huge fule companies have given to the Romney campaing, through the Political Action Committees, which, operate legally by calling themselves "charitable organizations", and concealing their monetary transactions.
The big fuel (oil) companies, like Chevron, Exxon-Mobile, etc, calculate, based on theprice of oil, how much of a profit margin for their refined gasoline they can get,without losing business/customers/driving miles.. they are good at these calculations...
There was a time in america when there was real competition in the gasloine industry. They were called "gas wars", and anyone over the age of, say, fifty will remember them. One gas station in town would lower the price of gas by a penny, the one down the street would lower it by two pennies, and its off to the races. In the mid nineteen sixties, gas cost about nineteen cents a gallon, and it seemed cheap. It was cheap.
Back then oil was mined (drilled) in america, there was real competition in the oil/gas industry, and american drivers drove all over the place, just to kill time, unconcerned about burning gas. Oldsters, teenagers, everyone in america drove....all the time.
There's a lot of oil left in the ground. We might as well use it up, while we desperately, obsessively development other means of energy utilization. Our fuel (oil) companies do not competer against each other, because they don't have to. Instead they work together to get the price of their product as high as possible, to maximize profit.
This is not free enterprise, this is not capitalism. This is a monopoly, in effect. Corporate control and corporate tyranny over us, the masses. Let's have either capitalism in america, or socialism. But for heavens' sake let's not have corporate oligarchy. That's tyranny!

Avoiding Humanity
UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS have been with us, buzzing around us, a long time, thousands of years, of you can believe the pictures crudely painted inside caves. Christopher Columbus wrote about them in his ocean voyage journal, unabashedly, since he had plenty of corroborating witnesses.
References to flying vehicles and creatures inside them occur in colonial american literature, and throughout european literature. All throughout european history, spectacular UFO displays have been occuring, and making it into the literature.
The great UFO craze of today started in 1947, after the crash near roswell, new mexico, of either a military craft, or an extraterrestrial one. At first the military gave the credit to aliens, then within a day after the crash on july 4, 1947, began claiming credit for itself, and has ever since.
Enrico Fermi, who as much as anyone else invented the atomic bomb, was interested in the UFO phenomenon. He didn't believe a word of it. His reasoning was as follows: if there were really intelligent beings on other planets, and if they were looking for other intelligent life in the universe, they would by now have found us, or we them. Since we haven't heard from them, they must not be out there.
Fermi was a brilliant man, and his reasoning sounded, and still sounds, quite convincing. He was as convinced as anyone ever has been that the human race is the only intelligent living species in the universe, and he used advanced scientific analysis to reach that conclusion, which distinguishes him from nearly everyone else who agrees with him.
Fermi took into account only logic and strict mathematical reasoning, which may not be enough. He failed to take into account psychology. Intelligent creatures anywhere would engage in something similar to what we call "thinking", and, like human thought, extraterrestrial thinking would likely be subject to psychological analysis.
In other words, whatever they would do, there would undoubtedly be a reason, or a thought, behind it, they would have plans of action. One question they would have to deal with is; how should they interact with humans, and should they interact with humans at all, or hide themselves from humans, as they doubtless would be quite technologically able to do.
You wonder if Fermi ever asked the question; if you were an alien, would you want to have anything to do with humans, other than observing and studying them, considering their treatment of each other? would YOU want to associate with humans. particularly in 1947, after witnessing world war two?
Fermi invented the atomic bomb. Fermi was part of the problem, not the solution. It might very well be because of people like enrico fermi that the aliens don't talk to us.

Staying ouf of it
WHEN SEPTEMBER rolls around each year, people begin to think about the end of summer, football, returning to school. In 1939, after september 1, the world was thinking about war. Germany had invaded Poland, France and England had declared war on Germany, and the world was wondering what would happen next, how big the war would become, how long it would last, how many would die.
Except in america. Over in our neck of the woods, people were thinking about football and the advent of autumn as usual. For two years and three months, world war two raged in europe, a largely one sided affair in which Hitler conquered one country at at time, without much resistance, and the american people regarded it all with only distant curiosity.
The american people, for all their intelligence and compassion, didn't seem to care about this new war.. The memory of world war one was too recent, the great depression was still in full swing, though economic conditions in the U.S. were significantly better than they had been in the nineteen thirties; there was simply too much to be concerned with at home, let the europeans deal with their own problems.
The average american citizen simply did not see anything happening in europe as a direct threat to the united states. Prosperous nations, like prosperous people, for the most part do not want to be troubled with the troubles of others. And even though in 1939 the economic collapse in america was now in its tenth year, there was still faith that soon it would become much better, and eventually return to normal.
America was basically a successful, prosperous nation, and would be so again, if left alone to solve its own problems. The idea that involvement in a massive war would stimulate the american economy and return it to full health was not given serious consideration anywhere, although this is exactly what would ultimately happen.
The French and English begged for help, all through 1940 and 1941, the united states responded with "lend - lease", assisting with material support, but, until pearl harbor, isolation, which has always been characteristic of the american people, prevailed. To risk american lives in foreign wars was unacceptable.
President Roosevelt, who knoew that war was inevitable, became so desperate that he felt he had no choice but to prod a potential enemy, such as japan, into attacking, which he did.
The american people are no less isolationist now than they were then. Without the world trade center attack, american foreign military involvement would be considerably less. And for those among us who understand that maintaining a world wide military power with a nation trillions of dollars in debt is not sustainable, have heart: fundamental american isolationism will one day bring most american military assets and commitments home, hopefully, before it is too late.

The Cost of Labor
THE ONE COMPLAINT most often heard about labor unions is that they have overstepped their authority, become too powerful, gone too far. Its hard to imagine anyone thinking that in a nation like the United States where only about ten percent of workers belong to unions, and unions have been declining in membership for decades.
Organized labor has been under atack from the corporate industrial complex and government for forty years, and the attack has been successful. One at a time, the states are enacting "right to work" laws, prohibiting membership in a labor union from being a requirement for a job.
The united states government began the attack on labor unions with passage of the Taft-Hartley act in 1947, making right to work laws legal. Since then, twenty three states have enacted such laws.
On the surface it sounds like right to work strikes a blow for freedom and choice; it is, of course, actually part of the attack against labor unions, and a very effective tactic in the war between the rich and poor. Still, labor unions, if they serve a function now, should be able to thrive with or without right to work laws.
However, those labor unions which still exist in america have obviously improved their lot in life considerably for their members by virtue of their collecting bargaining power. IN the auto industry, the electriciains and plumbers professions, and many other factory industries workers are making decent, if not outright desirable wages.
The conservatives who think that labor union destroy free enterprise would probably have that opinion simply because labor unions exist in the first place, not becaue they have become too powefrul. Please remember, for most of the history of the labor movement, political conservatives in america thought the labor movement should not exist, that it was an evil illegal conspiracy.
The most powerful labor union in the world, perhaps, is the major league baseball players union, which has only existed for about forty years. So powerful is this union that its members enjoy astronomical salaries, and great bargaining power with their employers. Its basiclly a level playing field in baseball, or maybe tilted too far in favor of the players.
Labor unions do that; they even the playing field. And please notice that the auto industry, the electrician , plumbing, and carpentry professions, among others, are alvie and well, even with the strangulating effect of organized labor. It may be that labor unions, when all is said and done, do not so much strangle an industry or economy, but rather uplift it, by raising the level of the worker to its proper plaece, with the free market system.
so maybe labor unions are as natural a part of free enterprise as supply, demand, and corporations.

ANDREW CARNEGIE was a great and successful man. He was one of those people who did not mind cleaning toilets when he was young, becuase he understood that it would lead to bigger and better things as he got older. And indeed it did.
Oftentimes mundane labor alienates young people from work and success, but not people like andrew carnegie. in carnegie's day the predominant attitude was laissez faire, social darwinism, dog eat dog, every man for himself, work your way up, anyone with authority earned it, and is free to use the authority as he sees fit.
Whatever wage you earned, it was fair, because you accepted the job, you didn't have to.
Working consitions for workers, laborers, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century were, by today's standards, atrocious, (as were working conditions throughout all of history). By the standards of the time, working conditions were only mildy atrocious, but unacceptable, nonetheless.
Labor unions began in mid nineteenth century factory restrooms, and lunchrooms. Workers uniting and working together to communicate with the bosses as a group, discussions of such things, was highly risky, and could involve loss of job, physical abuse, or withholding of pay.
It was no fun forming the first labor unnions, and extremely dangerous. From the beginning unions were regarded by the powers that be, the ruling wealthy corporate oligarchy and their media pawns, as illegal, subsersive, criminal conspiracies.
The history of industrial america is brutal and horrendous, particularly in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when labor strikes were endemic, and the corporataions and government used brutal violence to end strikes and destroy labor unions.
That reactionary, twisted attitude persists to this day, and labor unions are weaker than ever, because corporate ownership power is greater than ever. We have shortened the work week, improved working conditions and benefits, to a degree, but corporations own and control america more than ever before.
Labor Day in america can proudly claim that labor conditions have improved, somewhat. May the plague of fair labor conquer the entire world.

A Day of Labor
AFTER THE AMERICAN civil war, the industrial revolution got started in earnest in the united states; the american genius for turning catastrophic orgies of death into economic bonanzas.
It wasn't pretty. The huge corporations and their new factories, without precedent or external control, treated the workers like property, essentially doing with them whatever they wished. Long hours, low pay, prison like working conditions, impoverished working conditions. The philanthropy of andrew carnegie was built on the backs of thousands of horribly abused workers.
Carnegie was not reluctant to use guns against his striking workers, nor to allow them, their wives and children, to languish in dire poverty because of slave wages.
Worker strikes were a constant companion of american society between eighteen eighty and nineteen hundred. They were violent. Neither the corporations nor the government had any hesitation about using rifles and billy clubs quieten or disperse angry mobs.
Labor Day was invented in eighteen eighty two in response to all this. I is uncertain whether the iedea came from the top or bottom; for the sake of being reasonably appropiate we'll say that the michinist gets credit, not the executive.
Like every other holiday in america, the origina, true meaning of labor has been totally lost, adanconed, neglected, distrorted and twisted into something more convenient and fun. Americans love their holidays, as long as they revolve around fun, feature a day off from work, and occur on a monday.
Labor Day started out as a day to celebrate the greatness, the dignity and pride of the working man...but nowadays it celebrates...celebrating..it is our unofficial end of summer. A last fun fling before shcool starts.
So on labor day we no longer have parades of carpenters, factory workers, and plumbers, nor exhibits exalting the creative, hard working genius of the american worker; we have cook outs and boating on the lake, and, for a little while longer, jerry lewis.
And lo, and behold, we jump ahead to today, and we find workers in america...slightly less exploitied, but only slightly, and with few opportunities, since most jobs have been moved to countries where brutal exploitation of labor is still accepted. In america, if you have a wife and two kids, and work full time, chances are you live in poverty, and that just aint right. Millions of americans are in precisely that situation.
Most of the world celebrates May first as international workers day. As usual, the U.S.A. goes it alone. But as long as we all do it together, and for the right reasons, all is well. Maybe if we declared a national holiday of cooking out and watching TV in america, americans would slowly turn it into a day to celebrate labor.

Eminent Corporate Control
"FRACKING", is the process by which oil and several different types of natural gas are mined by injecting high pressure fluid, sometimes water, into the ground to break up rock and force the oil and gas to the surface; most people have heard about it. "Fracking" is short for "hydraulic fracturing."
It was invented shortly after world war two, but exploded in pupulairty in the late nineteen nineties when new technology and fracking techniques made it extremely effective, in terms of efficiency. Fracking combined with recently discoverd huge fields of natural gas have greatly stimulated the natural gas industry.
Big energy companies are wanting to use hydraulic fracturing wherever natural gas deposits are located, no matter where they are located, no matter beneath whose house. State legislatures and congress are conspicuously unwilling to enact definite, comprehensive legaslation regulating the industry, almost as if the politicians were in the pockets of the corporations.
Resolving the conflict between private property rights and corporate mineral rights may well be left to the court system, and the court system, like the legislative system, is in the pockets of the corporation, or so rumor has it. Something like "eminent domain" may emerge, in which corporations have the right to look for and harvest natural gas wherever they wish, as long as they pay market value for the property.
In america, corporate power prevails against the rights of the individual citizen, always has, and likely always will. If you awaken someday to find a drilling rig in your back yard, and a lawyer at your front door, don't say you haven't been warned.

SURELY BY NOW we can all agree to put aside this ludicrous idea that the upcoming american presidential election is all important, perhaps the most important election in modern times, because the two candidates represent drastically different points of view, and, depending on the outcome, the country will go in one direction., or, in a totally different direction, and the voters themselves have more choice, more contrasting choices, than ever before.
Let's get real. The funny thing is, both obama and romney are trying to sell us on this ridiculous idea. Romney thinks that obama is so unsuccessful and unpopular that the best strategy is to claim to be totally different than obama, while obama emphasizes that if romney were president, he would take the country in a totally different direction, a direction which has already been tried, and found to be disastrous.
What nonsense. What deception. obama and romney are as two peas in a pod. go ask any european, or, for that matter, any educated un american.
The american people, or at least most of them, are surely smart enough to understand that both obama and romney are being sponsored by essentially the same people, who by owning both candidates can best ensure that whichever one gets elected, true reform will never happen.
And it never has. And it never will, unless the people become so angry that they revolt. But since cable television and video games are available, the people tend to be happy, if a bit sedated.
Obama kept both of bush's vengeful wars humming right along, and bailed out the big bosy with government money, just like a good bush republican. Both romney and obama have briught into being watered down government health insurance, which leaves the big corporations as much in control, and as wealthy, as ever.
But here's the comforting thing. No matter how fervantly you support your presidential candidate, you can take comfort by admitting that, no matter which one wins, america will still be basically the same good ole U S of A.

Dealing With Mice, and Other Animals
ANIMALS are everywhere. No matter where you are, you are within ten feet of a rat, in all probability, and there aint a danged thing you can do about it. Every home has uninvited animals living in it, mostly insects, whether the home owner knows it or not. Animals live everywhere on this planet, and who knows where else?
When I was young and foolish, say about forty, I was sitting quietly, very quietly , one day, in my small comfy apartment, and my german shepherd was asleep on the floor, across the room. I'm pretty sure we must have gotten back from a long run, and were chilling.
I had been noticing signs of mice in the apartment, a bit o mouse crap here, and there, had taken note of it, and decided to take care of the problem - later.
My dog and I sat there, both of us quiet and motionless, he sleeping, I , as usual, daydreaming, with the room fully illuminated, whether by sunlight or lightbulbs I forget.
Suddenly four mice appeared from nowhere, and started running madly all over the place. One or two of them even closely approached my huge dog, evidently for inspection, possibly to investigate as a possible dead food source. Wolfie never even noticed.
I freaked, of course. After sitting in stunned silence for a few seconds, I stood up and walked towards my dog, thinking I might have to save him, but the mice vanished as quickly as they had appeared. Within minutes I had gone to wal mart, bought mouse traps, come home, and set them.
Over the next few days I caught sixteen mice, then there were no more. I made sure of that.
That taught me something. Something about animals, and animal behavior.
I recently visited my nintey two year old mother at her house, on her birthday, and discovered mouse droppings. She seemed unconcerned, the more uncerned the more I urged her not to be.
Other family members have seen the mice themselves scurrying around at my mom's dinner table, in her nice home. So, apparently, my entire family knows about the mice, but diesn't care. I am shocked. But maybe I shouldn't be.
Maybe the rest of my family is evolving spiritually into indian gurus, accepting of and loving towards all forms lof life, including mice. Maybe I should follow suit. Is this what the world is coming to? Seemingly not, but if so, we should all join up, perhaps.
But what will we do when the mice number in the trillions, literally? When tehy eat more food than we can grow for them? My mom is as smart and sharp as anyone, and independent. She'll do exactly what she wants to, trust me. By now she's probably killed every mouse in the hood, without telling me about it.
IN India, a middle class family might be at the dinner table, when suddenly a rat runs across the room. Nobody cares. Its like a bird flying by outside. In calcutta, there is a big central park, called "rat park". There, rats live by the trillions, nurtured and fed happily by the good citizens of calcutta.
The diversity of life, and species interrelationships, is amazing. Consider dog and man.
WE humans have an awfully hard time living with each other, but we can't live without each other. No wonder the extraterrestrials choose not to directly engage us. But at least in india, folks and rats get along...

Keeping Our Heads
RUGGED COWBOY in a pickup truck notices a bright light in the sky, as he drives adown a dirt road out in the middle of a huge area of pasture, tall grass, which goes on forever. The sky seems big, the horizon far away. No trees. The bright light fades away, but unless he was imagining things, a steer was floating through the air, briefly, beneath the light.
The next day the same cowboy drives down the same dirt road, and notices a dead cow not far from the dirt road. The body has been carved up, incredibly precisely, internal organs missing, no tract of bloo anywhere, all incisions precise, professional, beyond professional.
Everybody he tells this to either dissmisses it, laughs about it right in front of him, or gives him one of those "that's nice, buddy" kind of reactions. He soons learns to shut up about it, to safeguard his reputation, or at least to avoid creating a bad one. For now on, he just keeps it to himself.
This basic scenario happens thousands of times each year all over the world. The loss from herds of cattle is not drastic, but every animal costs money, and is worth money, so cattle ranchers keep a pretty close eye on their herds, as they expect their hired hands to do, and they don't like losses.
Sober, serious, sensible successful cattle ranchers almost to a man have had an experience like this. Whenever a big landowing rancher, with generations and decades of experience behind him, stats telling stories like this, its usually taken a bit more seriously, but not much.
Whether its a wild eighteen year old cowboy or a local leading ranch owner talking, the audience becomes a bit uneasy, uncomforatble. People simply find it hard to believe this kind of stuff, which, unfortunately, does not seem to prevent it from happening, It merely prevents it from being talked about, or properly investigated.
The best evidence, of course, is that extraterrestrial aliens, technologically advanced way beyond humanity, are monitoring human activity and, so it seems, various life forms on this planet.Fascinated, perhaps, by not only humans themselves, but by the company they keep.
For all we know, dog and cat abduction and mutilation are the most common form of interaction of all; but we would never about it, would we...
People tend to have two disctinct contrasting views about extraterrestrial aliens on earth; they either believe it so fervantly that they accept it as a matter of fact, or they are utterly contemptuous and dismissive of it.
Where did good old fashioned open mindedness and scientific research go to? Not in america's institutions of higher learning; you can scarcely find a qualified scientist who is seriously investigating the matter. They fear to, if nothing else, because to do so is to be abandoned by the "mainstream respectable" scientific community.
Any real scientists wanting to investigate UFOs seriously must abandon his or her educational and professional roots, set up shop as an independent wayward celebrity, and hope for the best. Sometimes they get rich and famous, sometimes not. Its sometimes hard to tell the difference.
HUman beings are smart enough to figure out what is going on, vis a vis UFOs, for real. Why we don't just buckle down and do it is beyond comprehension.

Caught in the Act
YOUNG, HANDSOME, UPRIGHT CONSERVATIVE G.O.P. V.P. nominee paul ryan, who is capable of sin after all, is experiencing one of the unpleasant aspects of being in the public spotlight; its a lot harder to lie and get away with it.
Everyone who becomes famous learns this painful lesson eventually, usually the hard way, the way mr ryan learned. It is surprising that he had not learned it long before, with all his years in the house of representatives. Or maybe he just had a momentary lapse.
In a recent interview he told the interviewer that he ran a marathon in just under three hours, which is a very impressive time, the sort of time everyone who runs a marathon dreams about, but few achieve. Ryan's actual time was something over four hours, which certainly isn't bad - just finishing a marathon is laudable.
He did not attempt to claim that his memory lapsed, which was smaart, because it didn't. Everyone who runs a marathon knows exactly how long it took to run it, and nobody ever forgets. By the same token, he did not do any dramatic, sad, sickening, syrupy mia culpa apology, also an intelligent move, because that of course would have been too hilarious.
He just factually restated the facts then moved on, apparently after he received flak about it from a brother, who really did have a good marathon time, and didn't want to let Ryan get away with it.
The more famous you get, the more you become addicted to fame, like a drug, and the more you want to impress people. So paul ryan is very definitely normal. Now, perhaps, he's a bit more humble.
It is to be hoped that democrats won't spoil the fun by claiming that this lil white lie is an overwhelming indictment of ryan's character, or some such foolishness. But don't be surprised if they do; this is big time, big league, winner take all american politics, after all.
Paul, who after all is still quite young, made a mistake, slid past it smoothly, and probably learned his lesson. The rest of us should be content to have a good hearty laugh.

Figuring Out Causal Connections
RECORD weekend murder spree in chicago. National epidemic of random gun violence. Polar ice cap smaller than ever. Polls indicate most americans believe wealthy are undertaxed.
What, if anything, do these three phenomena have in common? How are they connected, assuming that they are, in any way, shape, or form? We are often told that, ultimately, everything is related.
A butterfly flaps its wings in a tropical rain forest, this awakens a snake which startles a water buffalo which starts a stampede, which kicks up dust which travels through the air collecting moisture, one thing keeps leading to another, and eventually half a world away a hurricane generates a massive tsunami, which inundates and destroys whole cities.
Extreme though this seems, it reminds us that, if nothing else, matter and energy are intertwined, all events are caused by something, the world behaves the way it does because of an infinitely complicated web of causes and effects, connections.
Therefore, random gun violence in america, polar ice cap melting, and opinion polls concerning taxation are most probably related; they all have many causes, and many causes in common.
Let us for the sake of simplicity assert that these seemingly unrelated facts have in common that they were noticed by, and perhaps even caused by, human activity, if nothing else. It is a start towards understanding.

What, if anything, do these three phenomena have in common? How are they connected, assuming that they are, in any way, shape, or form? We are often told that, ultimately, everything is related.
A butterfly flaps its wings in a tropical rain forest, this awakens a snake which startles a water buffalo which starts a stampede, which kicks up dust which travels through the air collecting moisture, one thing keeps leading to another, and eventually half a world away a hurricane generates a massive tsunami, which inundates and destroys whole cities.
Extreme though this seems, it reminds us that, if nothing else, matter and energy are intertwined, all events are caused by something, the world behaves the way it does because of an infinitely complicated web of causes and effects, connections.
Therefore, random gun violence in america, polar ice cap melting, and opinion polls concerning taxation are most probably related; they all have many causes, and many causes in common.
Let us for the sake of simplicity assert that these seemingly unrelated facts have in common that they were noticed by, and perhaps even caused by, human activity, if nothing else. It is a start towards understanding.

Necessary Rules
LARRY KUDLOW, well known conservative economist and television celebrity, is angry with mainland china for breaking the rules. American conservatives were at one time angry with china for far more dramatic, fundamental reasons, like being communist, not allowing free enterprise or private property ownership, or for that matter, free and open elections.
But now that china has seen the light and has joined the great global capitalist bonanza, the complaining is less ideological, more technical. The free and open elections still haven't arrived, but private property has, to the delight of the international capitalist movement.
Things change. In america we used to pronounce the capital "Peking". Now, its "Beijing". Apparently, that means we have improved. And all human collective activitly, including economics, socialistic or capitalistic, must have rules. Competition must have rules, cooperatively followed.
China is still the old heavy handed centralized government monolith, but these days is subsidizing corporations which are nominally in private hands, rather than maintainting outright government ownership. Business persons are getting rich in china, their gap between the rich and poor is growing, cars, household appliances, and electronic gadgets are proliferating, and exports, made with very insexpensive labor, are flowing unto all the world.
China has seen enough of the material success of america, japan, and europe, and wants its fair share thereof. The chinese countryside is emptying out, and the cities are exploding with growth.
Larry Kudlow and the american conservative economic community might like to see the chinese government take its hands entirely off chinese industry, and allow it to sink or swim on its own merit, both in china and on the workd market, but that just aint gonna happen. They (the chinese) don't see capitalistic economics quite that way.
The chinese understand that international economic competition is dog eat dog, and they intend to win, even if it means brutally expoliting their own labor force, ignoring imports, and joining the Beijing government to the insustrial complex in a mutual push for eventual world domination.
Its a good sign that free marketeers like Larry Kudlow are quick to point out that we must have rules in free enterprise, that free enterprise can never be too free, lest it become anarchistic and chaotic, and that, if we're going to have a global economy, we must all, to some extent, cooperate.
Now the only problem is to get china to play by our rules, rather than theirs.
