MY MOTHER, who is a lovely lady, set me off today. We were talking on the phone, like we do twice a day, and she was talking about the weather, which she does with great frequency, and i was listening as usual.
Suddenly she said, "its going to be so warm today, in the seventies, that it makes you want to get out and work in your yard". She said this in a very positive, appreciative manner, as if she wanted to hug the weatherman. And i was about to agree, until i suddenly remembered that it's december in middle america.
so i lashed out at my mother, at the world, really, replying: "this weather makes you want to get out in your yard, and plant trees, to try to slow down global warming, before we start having ninety degree days in december".
I thought that was a pretty clever response. mom agreed. she's ninety two, and grew up on a farm, and has seen the weather change.
If we were taking all this seriously, addressing it realistically instead of languishing in denial, we'd all be out planting trees on these balmy december days, moving people inland from the coastal areas, especially places below sea level like new orleans, and/or building massive water control pumping systems to stem the rising tide.
but, far as i can tell, we aint doin' none o that. maybe by the time public pools are open in december in minnesota we'll decide something.
