RUSSIAN PRIME MINISTER medvedev gave a press conference the other day, at the end of which he answered a question concerning life on other planets, and extraterrestrial visits to earth. The question and answer took place, actually, after the formal event was over, and the microphones were turned off - supposedly.
He said that when a new leader comes to power in russia he is given a comprehensive file on the issue, detailing the history of extraterrestrial visits to russia, and responses to them. He indicated that it is well known within inner russian government circles that aliens are living among us. He did so with a bit of a tongue in cheek attitude, and it was assumed by all that indeed his answer was intended not to be serious.
Except, what if tf was serious? The extraterrestrial community, which operates almost like an international fan club, would like to think he was serious. People who believe in the presence of aliens among us believe it with a fervor remindful of religious zeal.
The people, millions of them, who are believers obviously want deeply for their beliefs to be true, so they assume that they are true, after the fashion of human religiosity. This is human nature.
The great scientist Neils Bohr, who developed the field of quantum mechanics, which is to date our best attempt to describe the laws of nature at the subatomic level, once welcomed a journalist into his office for an interview.
The reporter noticed that on the wall of Bohr's office was a horseshoe, facing up. Astounded, the reporter couldn't resist asking about it. "Dr Bohr, you are among the preeminent scientists in the world. Everyone knows that a horseshoe so placed is used as a talisman to bring good luck. Surely you cannot believe in this superstition."
To which bohr responded: "I indeed do not believe in this superstition. But my personal belief has nothing whatever to do with whether the superstition is true, so, I choose not to take chances." Maybe the russian prime minister is just not wanting to take any chances.
