The first AOL chatrooms I visited were national, folks from all over the country, but then I discovered local chatrooms, and thought they might make an interesting study. After all, the participants might have more in common, in terms of their daily lives in the same local area.
And so they did. The big difference was that now I was hanging with and sometimes talking to people who lived within driving distance of me. And in the local chats were indeed cliques and groups of people who did in fact gather together in real time and space, face to face.
Even though I had promised myself I would never go chasing all over the place meeting people or dating women, to do so now became tempting. Even to a completely dispassionate, objective journalist, such as myself, it became tempting. I started meeting people who tempted me to fuel up the car, and head out for a few hours, or a day...
