THE WORST THING that can happen to you in america is to be called a "socialist". You never want that to happen to you, because it'll ruin your life. If you are running for political office in america, and you want to win badly, the thing to do is to call your opponent a socialist, and, if you can implant that image in the electorate through repitition, you have a good chance to get elected.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, the united states of america is, has been, and will continue to be ; a socialist country. American socialized public schools graduate millions of brilliant but ill preparede students. socialistic sewer and water systems create continuous quality controversy and sewage treatment bonds at the ballot box.
City streets, country roads, state highways, and federal highways require a massive maintenance budget, payed for through taxes. Then of course we have midicaid, medicare, and social security.
The beautiful thing about american culture and government is that all this government involvement does not seem to tyrannize the america people, nor really limit their freedom in any meaningful way. Socialism, in the real world, need not be the enemy of freedom, contrary to what conservative american politicians would have you believe.
Under which banner do we place the highly touted america military? It isn't "privately owned".
Whether the free enterprizinasation of these institutions would improve them is anybody's guess. Trash collecting has been privatized in many american communities. What about privately owned water and sewer systems? Seems unworkable.
We must all connect our water systems together, to prevent chaos, must we not? Would it be helpful for us all to each own our "own you're on your own" water supply, to rely on coproration competition to supply wiater, or, to all have one system which we all own, operated through government, which we also all own, lest we forget? Its anyone's guess.
